Find Of The Month: Prince Edward Island Preserve Company

I don’t know about you, but the idea of home-brewed preserves, salsas, and BBQ sauce pretty much screams Mother’s Day – am I right? These days most mamas don’t have enough hours in the day to concoct their own culinary confections, but thankfully Prince Edward Island Preserve Company is here to make their meals a little marvellous, and their Mother’s Day splashed with a touch of Canadian culture.

For the uninitiated, the Preserve Company is a triple-threat of greatness. If you happen to live in or visit Prince Edward Island (which has earned its reputation of being the prettiest part of the country), you can stop by their sweet little river side restaurant for a bite to eat and a browse in their gift shop. If you’re looking for a tourist activity, you can also take a stroll through their picturesque Gardens of Hope. And if you’re not so lucky, you can simply order their amazing products online to get a taste of the East Coast delivered to your front door. For this month’s big ‘Find’, I’d like to take you on a guided tour through the variety of products you can snap up – so whether your mom is a grilling fiend or simply has a sweet tooth, you’ll have a go-to gift source for Mother’s Day and beyond.

As you’ve probably deduced, the so-called bread & butter of the Preserve Company is preserves. But before you go expecting basic strawberry and blueberry varieties, think again: juicy berries are dressed up with rich liquor infusions like cabernet sauvignon or amaretto, or pick up one of the unexpected varieties like lime, black currant, or hot pepper (try a dab on top of a smear cream cheese on a crispy cracker). The prices range from $5.25 – $7.50 per individual bottle, but you can also snap up one of the sampler gift boxes for $38.95 as a perfect thank-you, birthday, houseguest, or naturally, Mother’s Day gift option.

Honey is another signature part of the Preserve Company’s collection, created and harvested locally – and kissed with a bit of Grand Marnier and Amaretto depending on the variety you buy. Again, the prices are completely reasonable if you’re crafting your own goodie basket, in the $6.95 – $8.95 range, or you can snap up a gift set, like the one pictured above. I particularly love this as an option for the tea drinker in your life, since honey is a natural sweetener.

On that note, you’ve also got to check out the shop’s mouthwatering tea varieties. Whether you’re fan of earthy floral teas, exotic spiced teas, or flavourful fruit teas, they’ve got you covered with over a dozen options. A packet is just the pick-me-up a sick friend in need may be asking for, or bring some to your next summer soiree as a hostess gift and whip up some iced tea while you’re at it. Prices start at $4.50 and crawl up to $13.95, depending on the size you want.

Shopping for a sweet tooth? There’s plenty of options there as well – all of which work great as thank-yous, hostess, or ‘just because’ treats. Pick from juicy fruit sauces to drizzle over ice cream, crunchy maple peanut brittle as a fun treat for the office, or a jar of fruity curd for the baker in your bunch – all available for under $10 a pop.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you’ve got a bevy of savoury options to top off your self-made gift set or to use in the same capacities as I’ve outlined other gift ideas in this post. Grab a flavourful BBQ sauce or ethnic cooking base for Father’s Day, go for a fruity vinegar and bring a batch of homemade salad dressing to your next book club, or break out the chip & dip for that upcoming potluck with a jar of gourmet salsa.

As you’ve probably deduced, I’m just flying through the huge range of products available from this all-Canadian all star in the foodie gift-giving world. Hopefully I’ve helped you build up an appetite however, as me & the folks at the PEI Preserve Company have teamed up to hook not one, not two, but THREE of you up with gift baskets filled with gourmet goodies.
