The Secret Ingredient
‘Tis the season for body care shops to roll out their holiday offerings, and I couldn’t be more excited by what perennial all-star The Body Shop has in stores. The brand has long been a go-to for shoppers looking to either replenish their loved ones’ favourite limited-edition holiday products, or to simply pick up a ready-to-go gift idea at literally every price point, often pre-wrapped! This year I applaud them for honing in on three holiday baking ingredient-inspired fragrances. It’s always cool when you can tie a fragrance to an actual real-life scent, instead of abstractions like ‘Winter Frost’ or ‘Holiday Cheer’, am I right?
We’ll kick things off with the Christmas-dinner-inspired Cranberry Joy, a returning favourite in bright and festive red. The light and fruity fragrance will easily remind you of a delicious holiday cocktail, while the lush colour calls to mind holly berries and Santa’s suit. Cranberry Joy is one of the more universally appealing scents The Body Shop has – it works well no matter what your age range, or personal scent preferences. One particularly cool thing about this year’s seasonal scents is all products are available across all three fragrances, and The Body Shop has introduced a bevy of new items to add to your wish list. Check out the Festive Hand Care Duo housed in a sleigh-like reusable caddy – and at $20, it’s an apt hostess gift option.
Another returning favourite fragrance is Ginger Sparkle, featuring a cute-as-a-button gingerbread mascot and an invigorating spicy sweet smell. Channel holiday baking for months after unwrapping your gifts every time you use one of the limited-edition holiday products. This one is great for early birds to kick their morning showers off with a bang, and even boys will have a hard time saying no to the invigorating, zingy ginger aroma. The bright scent actually makes me gravitate toward picking it up in yet another new holiday product, Body Polish ($19), a gentle exfoliating scrub that sloughs off dry winter skin yet can actually be used everyday. Something about the combination of kicking dead skin to the curb and a zesty fresh smell just seems right, doesn’t it? As always, I should mention that many of The Body Shop’s holiday collection products include Community Fair Trade harvested shea butter from Ghana – so you know you shop with some serious peace-of-mind.
The third and final seasonal scent is Vanilla Bliss, a classic aroma that’s been given a gourmand overhaul this year to further tie into this possible unintentional but totally scrumptious anyway pantry goods theme. Vanilla is one of those classic yet irresistible scents – if a product comes in it, I’m hard-pressed not to choose it (which would in theory, make me drawn to all of the goods from this particular scent, if the other two weren’t equally delicious-smelling). This particular incarnation of vanilla smells just like you’ve cracked open a glass jar of vanilla pods, or like you’re about to chomp on a pastry chef’s luxurious dessert concoction. Because it’s so yum-tastic, my favourite product in this scent is the new Lip Balm Dome. With a hint of shimmer, moisturizing action, and a totally kissable, intoxicating smell, it’s a total steal for just $6, making it an ideal stocking stuffer or Secret Santa item.

Here’s what’s in the prize package:
Maca Face Root Duo – $8: A gift for $10 or less tailored to give him a perfect, soothing shave? Sounds like a perfect stocking stuffer or Secret Santa exchange gift to me!

Mango Butter Up Duo – $10: Two pint-sized presents in one tropical-coloured ornament; if your giftee isn’t all that into the seasonal scent stuff, liven up her winter with a pair of moisturizing products (lip butter and body butter) in a fresh Mango scent.
School of Beauty – $25: The holidays are a great time to help your favourite folks stock up on their favourite scents. Hence why The Body Shop has gathered up some of their cult favourites in this schoolhouse-shaped box. Why a school? Because the box actually comes from a Nepalese supplier, and with every purchase, said supplier has vowed to put dollars toward funding community projects in the region.
Strawberry Shower, Scrub & Soften Luxury Gift – $40: It still boggles my mind a touch that a ‘luxury’ gift can clock in at under $50, but there you have it. This scrumptious set combines one of The Body Shop’s most lush fragrances across a bevy of products to make your baths feel like a day at the spa. The set is actually a value pack (if you bought the items separately you’d be paying an extra $11), making the price totally perfect to gift to your sister or mother-in-law.
I’ve got one last announcement for you all! As you may know, America’s gift to the retail world, Black Friday, is coming up this Friday. A lot of Canadian retailers actually serve up some savings to us, including The Body Shop. Instead of just one day however, every day this week they’re going to be doing a crazy-good deal, so pop down to your local shop to see what’s on offer. And a little birdie told me Friday is going to serve up a truly must-buy steal, which Love Your Body (The Body Shop’s reward program) members can actually score a day early. Make this whole holiday shopping thing a little easier, doesn’t it?
