Do you want to know how I spent (at least part of) my Christmas Vacation? Doing research for the likes of you, in anticipation of dun-dun-dunnnn…Valentine’s Day. I’ve scoped out some pretty AMAZING ideas, and I’m happy to be kicking them off today with a sweet jewelry boutique based out of Texas called Golden Thread. The idea behind the custom jewelry line is to let you become part of the creative process. Instead of simply snapping up a pretty pendant from a mass merchandiser, why not select a piece that is truly and totally hers? Whether you go for an initials pendant, a birth stone, or a favourite place or shape, there’s an endless array of options to choose from. I teamed up with designer Jennifer Welker on picking out five amazing gems that would make a perfect Valentine’s or Mother’s Day find – peruse, send your mate in the direction of Golden Thread, and thank me later!
Framed Gold Disc with Initials and a Diamond – $680
Let’s start with the money shot: fashion royalty (ha!) Pippa Middleton was spotted wearing one of Golden Thread’s designs – a simple 14 karat gold pendant with up to three scripted initials and a pint-sized diamond. The delicate size (about a dime) makes it utterly wearable, and the customizable factor makes it utterly one-of-a-kind. Let’s not forget the cachet: you and a sibling of royalty are rocking the same freaking necklace! I love this as a gift for a bride-to-be from either the groom or the in-laws with your new initials engraved. A special memory of your day, and a promise of your life together.
Sideways Initial Necklace – $280
When I drafted this post I asked designer Jennifer Welker what her favourite pieces were. I’d already picked out a few of my own, but I love getting a second opinion right from the artist themselves. I was so happy our tastes aligned with this incredibly chic and understated necklace. You can add up to three initials, but I love the idea of a simple ‘B’ (for Brittany!) gracing your collarbone and begging for people to glance at it. This is probably a good time to mention that all of Golden Thread’s designs are customizable even beyond the letters you choose – you can opt for a different length, or actually build your own style from the ground up including the finish (white or yellow gold), monograms, and gems. A perfect Valentine’s Day gift if I ever saw one.
Antiqued Gold Arrowhead – $40
Yet another awesome thing about Golden Thread – you can accent your purchase with one of dozens of charms, all of which are super affordably priced, like this funky arrowhead style. Best of all, each of the charms actually comes with their own chain, so you can either wear it on its own, layer with another piece, or slide the charm onto your customized monogram necklace. I dig the arrowhead, but be sure to check out other options like birthstones, feathers, geometric shapes, leaves, and more. And in the spirit of Jennifer’s home state, there’s also some very cute Texan / University-themed pieces that can allow you to show off your school colours or sorority, even if you’re not from the deep south.
Tiny Matte Gold Vermeil Disc with Initials and a Birthstone for Baby and Child – $180
Doting grandparents or a new dad-to-be should definitely take a peek at Golden Thread’s stunning kid-oriented collection. If bling’s not your thing, this is pretty much the quintessential piece for you. It’s about three times the size of the ‘Framed Gold Disc’ I talked about at the beginning of this post – think, closer to a loonie – and skips the diamonds in favour of a dramatic script monogram to take over the medallion. As per the recommendations, it’ll actually shine on a longer chain to be worn as more of a statement piece – an elegant-as-ever one to be sure, but it’s a little bolder owing to the size. Plus it’s priced perfectly to fit just about anyone’s jewelry budget, especially when you consider how this 14k gold stunner is destined to become a family heirloom. J’adore.

The custom necklace that I would build for myself would be very similar to the one offered as a prize. It is simple but very lovely. The only change I would make is perhaps surrounding it with some Canadian natural gold nuggets along the outer edge.
