Where The Heart Is

Because it’s nearing the end of January and Valentine’s Day is still very much on the horizon for a lot of gift givers, expect to see a lot of ideas designed to make any gal smile (and a few romantic guy-friendly ideas too) over the next few weeks. Then again, while today’s gift source is perfectly wonderful for Valentine’s Day, I’d be equally happy to receive a present from Three Jane New York’s jewelry collection any day of the year.

This newbie brand has only been around for a year, but already designer (and fashion publicist) Katie Schloss has made her mark with press coverage by major magazines, and a steadily growing fan base. And for good reason – her collection of ‘costume’ jewelry is utterly elegant yet on-trend, and at a rather affordable price point, particularly for gift-giving. Because here’s the thing kids. If you beg and plead for a $4,000 necklace from your guy (or gal) one year, you’re setting a dangerous precedent, which makes them shy away from getting you anything sparkly at all. Consider brands like Three Jane a saviour – high style, doable price tag. And with that, here are my top 6 picks for your Valentine’s wish lists (and beyond)!

Three Jane NY Alis Rock Collection

Ali’s Rock Collection – $144 each
Let’s start things off with a serious punch of colour, in the form of these faceted sparklers that catch the light as much as they catch your attention. With juicy vibrant hues and a chunky, notice-me cut, you’d be surprised at how versatile a solid colour necklace like this can be, working equally well with a blazer for work and a party dress for night. Although I picked out some of the more bold hues, you can also opt for classic black or ruby red for a more subdued look. Plus isn’t this way more cool than a heart-shaped pendant from your local jeweller? Methinks yes.

Three Jane NY Daisys East Egg Studs

Daisy’s East Egg Studs – $34
I just finished a book set in Manhattan in the 1940s, which I immediately felt was channeled through these studs, calling to me with their vintage flair. Layers of tiny crystals make for an art deco meets mid-century vibe, without every looking too fussy or stodgy. Use them to dress up your day look or pull back your hair and let them do the talking at night. I adore these as bridesmaid gifts, or as a birthday present for a good friend – it’s hard to imagine a woman these wouldn’t work for.

Three Jane NY Robyns Tea Time Necklace

Robyn’s Tea Time Necklace – $118
I love me a ribbon necklace. Seriously, if I could swap out every bauble & gem I have for ribbon accents and still have everything look right, I’d probably do it. What I particularly love about this collection of ribbon-and-crystal necklaces is the contrast of the brightly coloured ribbons (you’ve got six shades to choose from) with the simply clarity of the beading. It allows for a real colour pop moment without being an overly dramatic statement piece – the clear beads add a bit of shine but will ultimately blend into your outfit. Just imagine it with a little black dress or under a printed blouse in a complementary colour and you’ve got a totally wow piece that’s perfect for your sister’s birthday or Mother’s Day. Love this? Be sure to check out the similarly styled Alexandra’s Gotta Gala necklace.

Three Jane NY Got A Hair Thing Bangle

Got A Hair Thing Bangle – $14 each
Growing up I somehow acquired a veritable rainbow of hair elastics, and without fail I would wear two of them every single day to match my outfit. Naturally these elastic-inspired bracelets have a special place for me because of that historical context, but really I just love how delicate they look on their own, or paired with a more chunky statement piece. The price makes them completely affordable to buy a stack, plus there’s literally a dozen colours to choose from. Perhaps the neatest part is only folks in the know will really get what’s wrapped around your wrist – and be amused to find out it’s not elastic after all. A sweet choice for your younger sister or niece.

Three Jane NY Day Night Drop

Day Night Drop – $22 each
My favourite thing about these classic earrings (aside from the price) is the customization factor – making them an apt choice anytime you want to gift two ladies in your life with similar but unique choices. With two stud choices – Filigree Fete & Nantucket Pearl – and eight sparkling gem hues, you can mix and match dozens of combinations until you find the pair that’ll perfectly complement your wardrobe. Much like many of the other pieces I’ve featured in this post, if you’re having a hard time picking just one pair, they’re affordable enough to order a few extra pairs for yourself.

Three Jane NY Map Necklace

Map Necklaces – $150 – $165
While all of Three Jane’s pieces are spectacular, the item that has probably garnered designer Katie Schloss the most attention are these stunning envelope-shaped map necklaces, inlaid with a small diamond. You can select from dozens of premade famous destinations (including fictional ones like Narnia and Oz) or you can actually custom order a necklace to signify a special place for your giftee – like the place you first met, kissed, or proposed, or your wedding venue, first home together, or even birthplace if you’re buying for a young lady on a special birthday. The necklace shows an engraved relief of your chosen destination, and the diamond marks the spot where your heart is (whether or not it’s actually home). These are easily one of my favourite Valentine’s gifts ever because the possibilities are limitless, and I’m always in favour of custom over couture or canned.

Before I forget, don’t think guys are excluded. Three Jane actually has a lovely line of cufflinks for you to bedeck your boy. In the meantime, two of you are going to tell me where your heart is, because I’ve got two Map Necklaces to giveaway to two Canadian Gift Guide readers. Want it to be you? Here’s how to enter:

1) Leave a comment by February 8th with your favourite piece of jewelry from the Three Jane collection (including the colour!) AND what general place you’d like to see on a map necklace of your own.

2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around February 9th to select the winners, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.

3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible to participate in this promotion.

4) Bonus Entry: Three Jane is on all sorts of social media. The more you like, the more you earn bonus entries – up to four, to be exact. Your choices are: Like Three Jane on FB & leave a comment, follow Three Jane on Twitter and tag them in a tweet, follow Three Jane on Pinterest and repin one of their pins, and follow Three Jane on Tumblr & leave a note. Whatever you decide to do, leave comments below with links to your FB comment / Tweet / Pin / and Tumblr.

I love the bold colours, especially the neon green of Ali’s rocks and the Art Deco vintage quality of the East egg studs. Too much to choose from, something sparkly is always a good gift.
As for the map pendant, the address of our wedding venue or church would be nice, but the most meaningful if addresses would be the one of the first house we own ( which has yet to happen)

The nantucket pearl studs in Green with envy is my favourite. The map necklace is cool, I have a thing about maps and travel, but I would pick the location of hospital where my two kids were born.

I love the Map Necklace — what a cool idea. It’s hard to pick just one place though. I’d have to say a favorite vacation spot.

I absoutley would LOVE to win the Map Necklace. The place that I would choose to put on it would be Victoria Beach/Grand Beach in Manitoba. In the summer of 2012 my boyfriend of 5 years and I spent one week at a friend’s cabin. We fell in love with the beach, air and with eachother again as we had been going through a hard time… In April of 2013 my boyfriend passed away due to illness after I took care of him for 4 months. I am so very thankful that we had that time in the summer together, as it was the last trip that we shared, and the last time I can remember being “us”.
This would be an absoutley wonderful keepsake for me…
