Music Sounds Better With You
For whatever reason, summer tends to be a musical season, one might say the most musical of them all. Perhaps it’s because we need backup jams when hosting BBQs, or we’re lounging on patios and poolside more often and hear that song of the summer, or we’re attending festivals or concerts in the great outdoors…whatever the case may be, today I’ve plucked five gifts perfect for the music lovers on your list.
Needle In A Play-Stack Turntable – $169 @ ModCloth
If your giftee believes vinyl is devine, they’ll flip for this retro-inspired turntable that accommodates three speeds for albums new & old. The built-in speaker and carrying case make it ultra portable, but perhaps the neatest feature is the way this decidedly ol’ skool music player connects with the 21st century. First of all, if you’ve got a particular album on vinyl and ONLY on vinyl, you can actually hook your turntable up to your computer to ‘rip’ tracks from it. Secondly, you can also plug your MP3 player into the included auxiliary port for when you just want to let the tunes roll all night long. Smart!
Lyric Culture Tees – $39+
LA-based Lyric Culture pays homage to (mostly) classic tunes with their line-up of way-cooler-than-concert-tee incarnations of iconic lyrics. With options for men, ladies, juniors, and even pets, they’ve got dozens of tops tailored to their source of inspiration – from Brit Pop takes on The Beatles to sexed-up versions of 70s rocker lyrics, this is a fun way to pay homage to a favourite band without donning an overpriced, tacky-looking top. Many of the women’s tops also feature fun, one-of-a-kind details like cutout or tied up backs to bring yesterday’s lyrics firmly into today’s world. Looking for some more recent hits? Kelly Clarkson and 1D are some of the newbies on tap – keep your eyes peeled for new releases.
Munchkin Mozart Magic Cube – $28.88 @ Wal-Mart
Yup, because even the little ones should learn to love music from a young age. This inventive baby toy plays off the ‘Mozart Theory’, that tots who listen to the composer will grow up with greater brain power. The device lets them press five large buttons to hear the dulcet tones of various orchestra instruments. They can also flip on orchestra mode using one of Mozart’s 8 most famous compositions, and add or subtract various instruments from the arrangement as the song plays. Yes it’s a noisemaker, but it’s a heck of a lot better than the beeps & pows coming from your average electronic baby toy. Way too cute!
‘Atom’ 3D Printed Guitar – $3,500+ USD @ ODD
Now this is for a career musician, or someone that ought to be one at least, in terms of the ‘hobby’ scale. I introduced 3D printing to some friends awhile back – it’s a pretty special process that allows you to render just about any shape you want. In this case, the manufacturers at ODD have come up with a Les Paul inspired guitar that allows for tons of customization, incredible sound quality, great durability, and a kick ass look and feel – all for, quite frankly, a fraction of the cost of a regular custom-made guitar. The ‘Atom’ is just one of a half-dozen models available, and in and of itself it can be tweaked in terms of colour and materials. A dream gift if I ever saw one.
Knock Headphones – $37 @ Coloud
Music’s nothing without something grand to listen to it through – and these minimalist headphones from Scandinavian brand Coloud fits the bill. The entire philosophy of the company is to create headphones that trims down the bells and whistles, aside from all you really need for a great listening experience: lightweight portability (with a no-tangle cord), long-lasting comfort, and if you’re up to it, a fun fashion statement with your choice of colours. Each pair also has a built-in microphone & remote to allow you to chatter on the phone or skip through songs without fishing out your device. You can buy Coloud directly through their website (for $15 shipping) or through dozens of retailers across Canada including HMV, Indigo and Best Buy along with tons of local independent shops.
