This post is sort of a hybrid of two ideas. The first is gift ideas to make for an ultimate kitchen, particularly when serving up a hearty breakfast or brunch. The second are items every guy or gal should have on their wedding registries (trust me, I did!) in hopes some loved one will bestow something super special on them.
On that note, a quick thought about registries as several of my single and engaged friends alike have spoken to me about them: no, it’s not ‘rude’ to register. People, in general, will want to shower you with gifts (hence ‘wedding showers’) to help you and your spouse prepare for a new life together – and if they don’t, well, they understand it’s expected of them anyway. That being said, register for items at a range of price points – too many lower priced items and people will feel ‘cheap’ buying you one or two measuring cups (even if they were $15 – $25 a piece). Too many big items and people will feel anxious about splurging. A healthy balance makes for good gift-receiving prospects – and don’t be shy about registering for some pricier items; sometimes folks will want to ‘go in’ on a gift together, or a particularly close relative may be looking to treat you to that item you really, truly want and need. And with that, here’s a few ideas to get you started!
Breville Juice Fountain Elite – $399 @ The Bay
First up, what’s a breakfast spread without some fresh juice or smoothies? The Breville Juice Fountain Elite packs restaurant-grade performance into a home-sized, super sleek package. It’s high-powered motor nets up to 30% more juice than most consumer models. And with two speeds and an extra wide feed chute, you’ll be serving up healthy drinks in no time.
Nespresso Citiz With Milk – $319 @ Future Shop
For those that prefer something with a little more bite in the morning, Nespresso Citiz With Milk is a must-have replacement for a trip down to Starbucks. Available in a few neutral shades plus an eye-popping cherry red, it’s a must for anyone that loves those frothy, foamy drinks you thought were only possible in a commercial setting. Best of all, it pumps out single servings, meaning you can customize each drink – although it’s really all made possible with the simple push of one button.
KitchenAid Pro Line Waffle Maker – $239 @ Bed, Bath & Beyond
I’m going to make a stand for novelty appliances right here and right now: if it’s something you TRULY love, it’s absolutely worth it. In building this post, I came across everything from grilled cheese cast iron press pans to breakfast sandwich makers to cordless crepe pans. On my registry, one of my favourite and most-used items was a high-end waffle maker. Although not quite as luxe as the model above, I use it almost every weekend – granted, waffles are one of my fave foods, but again, worth it! If you’re a diehard breakfast fan or brunch hostess, this top of the line waffle maker must be on your list. It has the magical fluff-inducing flippy powers that hotel and commercial models have, but it also has the added benefit of whipping up two light and crispy waffles at once. Consider this my upgrade when my current model eventually conks out ;)
Breville Bread Maker – $249.95 @ Linen Chest
If you haven’t noticed, bread at the grocery stores (and the bakeries) has gone up in price, and to be honest, down in quality (bakeries excluded!) Bread is one of the *easiest* things on the planet to make, and is made even simpler when you factor in a breadmaker that can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. It’s still something of a time-consuming process so you need to ensure your loaf is prepped well before guests arrive – the good news is, this high-end bread maker has a 13-hour delay meaning you can toss in the starter the night before and wake up to the heavenly aroma of bread in the making. That’s just one of the many settings that make this one a winner: 3 crust colour options, a pause button to add decorative touches, and a fruit / nut dispenser to punch up the flavour all add to your baking prowess.
Magimix Colored Vision Toaster – $253+ @ Williams Sonoma (or @ CHEFS Catalog)
Now a good loaf of bread goes hand-in-hand with an ol’ kitchen standby: the toaster. But when we’re talking about the toaster pictured above, what we’re really talking about is the Rolls Royce of toasters. Not only does is it a serious piece of countertop eye candy, it’s also ridiculously smart and functional. The glass walls of the Magimix Colored Vision Toaster allow you to see your item as it’s browning, to ensure you hit the perfect amount of crispiness. It’s got, quite possibly, the biggest range of settings I’ve ever seen as well – with a scale from 1 to 10 to suit whatever bread you’re munching on or personal preferences. It’s also got special functions for bagels, reheating, and defrosting items; allowing you to skip hauling out the toaster oven at the same time. Available in three colored finishes (plus a slightly pricier stainless steel model) this is one toaster you won’t be hiding away in a cupboard somewhere. Plus, based on their Facebook page it looks like more adorable shades are being rolled out!
Hopefully I got your tummies rumbling and your minds turning as you start crafting either your wedding registry, Christmas gift list, or even your shopping list for a dear friend or family member’s pending special event.
