All In The Family
I love my sister, but I’m not too sure how we would gel if we had to run a business together. That being said, there is something lovely about the idea of your coworkers being your kin – it might inspire you to work harder for the betterment of both your families, and to be more cautious about filing a complaint somewhere (although mom and dad tend to make the best mediators of all time). Anyway I thought I’d highlight three family-run businesses for you today, so you can support those brave enough to labour beside their loved ones every single day.
Finchittida Finch – $35+
Twin sister duo Tida and Lisa have taken their creative powers and combined them to create one unique, Laotian-inspired jewelry line full of bold acrylic and metal pieces. The gals are proud of their sisterhood, having attended the same college and nicknaming one of their lines ‘monozygotic’ as an ode to their twindom. The items are produced in the UK but I believe you can ship them to Canada. Alternatively a select number of items are also in-stock at ASOS, which provides free global shipping.
JUMA – $85+
Siblings Alia and Jamil Juma have had the Canadian fashion guard on notice ever since launching their line of kaleidoscopic accessories and clothing. Their line is definitely geared toward a high-end market, but I love the idea of splurging on a special piece from a Canadian brand, particularly because JUMA’s stuff really does have that one-of-a-kind feel to it. What’s neat is the brand actually carries a global influence – Alia and Jamil actually live in various parts of the globe (from China through to New York, with an office in Toronto). Keep an eye out for them at Canadian fashion week or peruse their website to find a unique item for your fave lady.
Moody Sisters Organic Skincare – $4.95+
There is no bonding force quite as strong as genetics, is there? That’s what sisters Jess and Whitney were grappling with when their skin was quite literally acting ‘moody’ – prone to breakouts and other annoying skin calamities, the girls set out to craft their own line of products that could tame their troubled skin. In doing so, they realized they were onto something great, and soon began producing their goods for the masses. The idea in a nutshell was to provide affordable, natural, organic skincare products to help combat whatever skin ailments you’re grappling with. With most items available for under $20, it won’t bust the bank for you to swap your chemical-laden products for a natural solution either. The gals were nice enough to send me an eye makeup remover and moisturizer to try out and I’m happy to report both of them worked splendidly – and would be ideal for travel, thanks to their heavy-duty metal canisters that won’t get squashed mid-flight. Bonus points for liking (and protecting) cats with their Coconut Lime Facial Scrub / ‘Black Cat Project’.
In a final tip o’ the hat to the realm of family businesses, Moody Sisters have been kind enough to put up a $25 GC for grabs for one of you lucky readers. That’ll take you a surprisingly far way in dabbling in the brand’s line of awesome skincare goods (plus inspire you to buy more, I’m sure). Here’s how to enter:
