Make A Splash
Posted by Canadian Gift Guide on April 22, 2014 · 103 Comments
If you know Canada like I know Canada, you know that the first hints of spring immediately lead to a mental fast forwarding for most Canucks: we’re dreaming of fresh veggies harvested from the garden, donning shorts and baring our pasty legs, and perhaps even planning a trip to the beach or a pool renovation in our yards. Since I’ve got swim season on the brain, I thought it would be fun to round up a few awesome gift ideas for your next poolside (or any body of water) excursion.
Sea Breeze Totes – $32 each @ PBteen
First and foremost, any gal heading to the waterfront needs a stylish tote bag to keep all of her essentials at hand, and these adorable striped and sequined totes from PBteen fit the bill. Rendered in colourful yet sturdy canvas, you can pick up one of these chic bags in one of four colour and pattern combinations, all of which are perfectly tailored to your beachside ensemble – from nautical anchors to tropical palm trees, no matter what theme your suit or coverup, there’s a cute bag to match. Plus you can even customize these bags with the initials of whomever you’re gifting it to – consider it as a fun birthday gift for your niece (with a swimwear gift card stashed inside) or as a cool gift for a friend that lives on the lake.
The Ultra Fast-Dry Towel – $29.95 for large @ Discovery Trekking
If you’re spending the day on the sand or by the pool, the last thing you want is a sopping wet towel when you slip in and out of the water. This innovative, moisture-wicking towel from Canadian brand Discovery Trekking solves that problem, by drying at lightning speeds between uses. Available in a huge range of colours and a number of different sizes, this ultra lightweight towel resists sand, provides 97% UV protection, and is particularly great for travelers heading to sunny (and wet) destinations.
Cocktail Caddy Pool Float – $137 @ Pottery Barn
Why get out of the pool for a sip or snack when you can simply let this floating snack cushion meander about? Featuring four cup holders and a central bucket, this floating oasis is made from water-resistant marine fabric, for long-lasting durability. Use it to keep treats close at hand, or to stash a hand towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, and other poolside essentials. An awesome choice for a family member that’s just installed a new pool or bought a new home with a pool.
Banzai Grand Slam Baseball Slide – $29.99 @ Canadian Tire
If the little ones are too shrimpy (or scared) to brave the actual pool, they can still have fun in the sun with these cleverly designed slip ‘n slide. With a square shape designed to resemble a baseball field, watch as the tykes ‘slide’ their way to the base of their choice under jets of water. You can even use the toy AS a baseball field, thanks to the included ball and bat. The only rule? No running, only sliding! A perfect choice for the grandkids on a hot summer day.
Aqua Di Lara Swimwear – From $170
Fun fact: I discovered this brand whilst playing an addictive mobile game called Covet, but it was only while drafting this post that I realize it’s actually a Canadian line. Not that you’d know it – the exotic prints and hotter-than-hot necklines and cuts channel the Caribbean more than the great white north. Whether you’re looking for a figure-flattering monokini or a standout classic bikini or even a sleek coverup, Aqua Di Lara delivers. Plus, you won’t have to run the risk of running into someone else in the same suit as you if you keep this brand your little secret. If you’re iffy about buying a bathing suit for a loved one (understandable), consider covertly introducing them and offering to buy the suit of their choice for a birthday or anniversary gift.
Finally I’ve got some news that’s sure to put some spring (or summer) in your step. I’m giving away the super cute turtle & pink stripe tote bag from PBteen (sans customization). If you’re interested in getting ahead of your summer wardrobe planning, here’s how to enter:
1) Tell me in the comments below – which of these poolside essentials would you most love to gift or get? You have till May 11 to share your pick.
2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around May 12, 2014 to select the winner(s), who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.
