Yearning For Yoga
Posted by Canadian Gift Guide on January 16, 2012 · 109 Comments
At the end of last year, I asked for some insight on what some of your New Years Resolutions were. One of the things I’d planned to write about this winter was gift giving ideas to help people stick with whatever they’ve pledged to do. Of course, one of the most common resolutions is to ‘finally get in shape’, by whatever means necessary. And you know, it’s a noble goal. I myself aimed to make working out a regular part of my weekly routine a few years ago, and I’ve maintained it to this day. If you’re among the many who ARE planning to get fit, or maybe are just looking for a way to bliss out, today’s gift ideas are for yoga enthusiasts – whether new to the fold or longtime lovers of getting limber.
Element: Hatha & Flow Yoga DVD – $16.98 @ Amazon.ca
If you’re truly a beginner to yoga, or if you just feel like you haven’t got the hang of it yet, this is the DVD for you. It includes two thirty-minute routines – one where you mostly do static poses and stretches to build flexibility, the other where you flow through movements for a more aerobic workout – that can be done independently or together. And if you’re challenged in the flexibility department (like myself), the DVD also comes with a strap to help with some of the more muscle-intensive poses. Your instructor Tamal (and the lush tropical backdrop) is a helpful motivator to pop this into the DVD player – he’s truly skilled at breaking down exactly what each of your muscles should be doing to either make things easier, or to make you really feel them. Plus, you’ve got to believe the guy knows what he’s talking about; apparently he grew up on a yoga ashram, and yet he never ostracizes you with too much focus on the spiritual side of yoga – only challenges you to do your best.
The Mat – $68 @ lululemon
The Canadian yoga darling of the world, lululemon, is beloved by yoga enthusiasts and beginners alike for their athletically engineered workout gear that also happens to be uber comfy cozy. Naturally it makes sense to turn to one of the top yoga brands out there for your equipment as well, including their signature no slip yoga mat that’s perfect whether you love to get steamed up with hot yoga or to just channel your inner zen through a round of hatha yoga. The reviews across the board praise the mat for its durability, flexibility (it has two sides depending on your practice), and absorbency for the sweat you’re sure to shed while working out.
Jo-Sha Wipes – $11.99 for a 20-Pack
If you’ve got a fancy mat, there’s no doubt you’ll want to keep it in as pristine condition as possible. Jo-Sha cleansing wipes are an all-natural solution to both keep your yoga mat smelling fresh and keep your skin free from any bacterial creepy crawlies that may build up over time. The four different scents – tangerine, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint – also boast aromatherapy benefits, from boosting energy to allowing you to unwind. There are a few studios in Canada that sell the wipes directly, or check out etailer Barefoot Yoga.
Fila Form Yoga Bag – $27.99 @ Sears
The beauty of yoga is all you really need is yourself, and to a certain degree, a mat. There are tons of companies out there producing beautiful yoga clothing that also makes a great gift, but I’m just focusing on the semi-necessities for your pal’s practice. This pretty yoga bag has an exterior strap to tote your mat to classes, but it also works perfectly as an everyday gym bag as well. The price makes it a great fit for your girlfriend / sister / friend that’s just revving themselves up for a few hard workouts.
Yoga to the Rescue: Remedies For Real Girls Yoga Deck – $16.95 (or $12.37 on Amazon.ca or email The Crowne Gallery @ crownegallery@sympatico.ca)
As you’ve probably discerned by this point, I’m not that into the whole uber spiritual side of yoga. I fully appreciate the calming and body-improving benefits from yoga, but the ‘body is my temple thing’ is a little beyond me. Enter Amy Luwis’ crazy cute yoga deck, featuring 48 yoga poses and fun illustrations that break down where every muscle should be, ways to take it a little easier on your limbs, and what exactly each pose can do for you – from tightening up your tush to curbing mid-afternoon snack cravings. Divided into seven easy-to-follow sections, you’ll find a yoga solution for any everyday malady. Looking for some on-the-go aid? You can also track down one of three yoga apps for your Smartphone including YogaBliss, YogaRemedy, and YogaSexy to get you ready for rest, recovery, and date nights alike.

Hehehe! Considering I am about to be a brand new home owner in T-minus 14 days, I would loooooove the fridge magnets so that my fridge won’t be bare! But in terms of the other items listed, I would really find value in the Fila Fit bag because I started doing hot yoga at the beginning of the month. The experience has been phenomenal and I am reaping the rewards of this new practice in so many areas of my life. HOWEVER, I am like a goofy backpacker when I go there! I have 3 different bags and towel and this and that! I feel so disorganized! The bag would totally help me out!
I would love the yoga cards as I would love to send them out to my friends.
The yoga bag is my choice.
I would love the yoga mat! Mine is cheap and curls up on itself all the time.
