Mag Magic

Next time you’re at the grocery store picking up appies for your holiday gathering or at the drug store snapping up cologne for your hubby, take a peek at the magazine section, especially around the tills. It seems more and more magazines are releasing special standalone ‘editions’ of their mags, most of which fall somewhere between a very of the moment coffee table book and throwaway periodical. Since many of these issues encapsulate the past year, they all happen to be launched around this time, which makes them an excellent small gift idea. Whether using them as a finisher, stocking stuffer, or part of a Secret Santa offering, here’s a quick overview of some of the stuff out there:

For The Fashionista:
– Featuring Hollywood’s favourite Gossip Girl on the cover, Vogue’s ‘Best Dressed’ list looks at the most stylish ladies, couples, and sources for beauty, fitness, and more ($15)
– InStyle has released a magazine-style fashion guide that is so sumptuous looking, it’s hard to believe it’s sold on newsstands ($20)

For The Music Fan
– People Magazine has made a habit out of releasing special Country Editions, with this year’s issue focusing on one of the grandmama’s of the genre – Reba McIntyre ($10)
– Still want more country? Taylor Swift and US Weekly have partnered to release a special ‘Taylor’ glossy magazine, featuring four giant posters, exclusive photos, and bits and pieces of insider info straight from the wunderkid herself ($11)
– Rolling Stone magazine always has great collectors issues, and right now be sure to keep an eye out for the ‘Top 500 Songs of All Time’ ($15) or the ‘Top 100 Beatles Songs’ ($10)

For The Sports Fanatic:
– 100 Greatest Hockey Players ($8) takes a look at the top players in every position throughout the history of hockey. With insider profiles, tons of glossy photos, and the Great One donning the cover, this is a must for the hockey fan in your family – no matter what their age.

For The Well-Informed
– Maclean’s University Report ($10) may be controversial, but it’s still the gold standard for ranking our nation’s top post-secondary institutions. Gift the high schooler in your life with the promise of a bright future.
– Time Magazine has once again released a year in review (the Annual) that looks at the biggest, most influential, and you-shoulda-been-there events, issues, people, controversies, triumphs, innovations, and more in this time capsule-in-a-book.

Be sure to check your newsstand for more fantastic year-end issues! Entertainment Weekly, People, and several other star-oriented mags typically release theirs in the last two weeks of the year.
