Luck Of The Irish

St. Patrick’s is such a weird day in general…and not exactly a primo gift-giving occasion. But here I am, writing you a post on it anyway. I suppose the rationale could be made that if you’re attending a party and want to bring a hostess gift, or you’ve got some annual traditions surrounding it that you’d like to cap off with a pressie, or if you just really love celebrating Irish culture, then here you go. Five hand-picked gift ideas to bring you good luck this Saturday.

Swarovski Shamrock Earrings – $14 @ Green Ribbon Gems
Have a lucky lass you’re planning to share St. Patrick’s with? Show her she’s your M’fhíorghrá (true love) with a pair of pretty yet affordable sparklers that may actually pass the test for style beyond the big day o’ drinking.

Cynthia Sylvia Stout Shampoo – $9.95 to $29.95
Beer. For your hair. Yes, you read that right. Lush’s lemon, cognac, and Irish stout-infused shampoo is the perfect pre-party pick-me-up that’ll not only get you geared up for a night of drinking tinted brews, but give you beautiful hair for all those regret-me-not photos that’ll pop up on Facebook the next day. Buy a bottle for your roommate / fellow party goer as a sly nod to the holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day Cookie Cutter Set – $7.50 @ Golda’s Kitchen
If your St. Patrick’s Day is headed in one of two directions, consider this gift pack – wrapped in a pretty green ribbon – an apt gift solution. Option one, if you’re attending a five-course Irish-themed dinner with beers paired to each dish, gift the gracious hosts with a whimsical nod to the season. Option two, if you’re dropping your kids off to be babysat by your mom and dad, best friends, or siblings, give them a thank-you gift that’ll also make for a fun activity: baking Irish-inspired cookies. Grab a bottle of mint extract to step up the theme!

Plum Lucky by Janet Evanovich – $8.99 @ Bookstores
If you haven’t heard of the wildly popular, campy mass market series starring Stephanie Plum, reluctant bounty hunter, get caught up in the ongoing mania with prolific author Janet Evanovich’s nod to March 17th, Plum Lucky. The books are best known for their ‘number-themed’ titles likeOne For The Money, but the ‘Between The Numbers’ entries are no less enticing. Pick this up for your pal that loves a good thriller, especially if they’ve already been inducted into the crazy world of Stephanie, her grandma, and her constantly shifting cycle of foes, friends, and love interests.

14K Gold Claddagh Ring  – $39.95 @ Glencara
The claddagh ring is a well-known sign of two things: Irish culture and a hope for love. Gift it for someone to wear with the heart facing in if you’re all sewn up with each other, or hook your bestest friend up with it and let it face out to show the world they’re interested in sharing their heart – even if it’s just for some post-pub snogging this weekend. And who better to buy from than Glencara, a jewellery store devoted to all things Irish?

Soda Bread Mix – $2.99 from Bob’s Red Mill
If you’re crashing at a friend’s place post-imbibing this evening, consider coming over in the afternoon first for a round of quickie baking in the form of a loaf of Irish Soda Bread from Bob’s Red Mill. It’s a cheap and cheerful way to say ‘thanks for the sofa’, and your stomach will thank both of you later on! Check your local grocery or natural foods store – Bob’s Red Mill is all over the place, but you can order online if need be.

Tees / Tanks – $24-$28 @ Urban Outfitters
If you’re going to go the gimmicky tee route, at least make it funny / cute okay? This cadre of Urban Outfitters offerings serves up a little attitude that’s sure to get your giftee noticed while you’re out noshing on Irish stew or potatoes.
