Ice Ice Baby

Novelty ice cube trays are having a bit of a moment right now. Or, they have been for the last half-decade it seems. Fred is definitely taking the lead out there with shapes as varied as sinking ships and icy bling to dentures and tikis, but there are plenty of other cool ice cube tray ideas out there. Truthfully most people only need one, or two, ice cube trays in their lives (unless they’re really into theme parties). But if someone is either A) stuck with boring ol’ square cubes or B) moving out for the first time, this is a super fun and affordable idea. Without further ado, let me introduce you to the ice cube trays of your dreams kids…

Tovolo King Cube Silicone Ice Cube Tray – $11.49 @ Bed, Bath & Beyond
There’s nothing quite so frustrating as whipping up a sparkling punch or attempting to infuse a pitcher of water with frozen raspberries than the blazing summer heat coming along and raining on your parade, in the form of melting your ice cubes. I kid, there are far more frustrating things. But if you want to keep your drinks chilled for longer – say, over the span of your little ones’ afternoon birthday soiree – or slowly let flavour seep into your drink of choice, these 2″ king cubes are a killer choice.

Prepara Ice Balls (pack of 4) – $16.50 @
These pretty ice sphere makers have been on my radar for a good six months now. The concept is simple – pour water into one of the four containers, click em together, and store them anyway in your freezer. When you’re good & frozen, you’ve got 3″ balls with a marble-esque finish. Experiment with different ingredients – like mint leaves for mojitos or grenadine for cocktails – for a gorgeous finished effect.

Cool Jewels Ice Cube Tray – $10 @ Indigo
Bringing new meaning to the word ‘ice’ when applied to gems and baubles, these fun cubes are a great girly pick if you’re pre-gaming with the gals before a night on the town. Fun idea? Consider freezing juice in rainbow hues and using the cubes with your favourite clear liquor for a video-game-inspired treat.

Trudeau Spectra II Citrus Shaped Ice Cube Tray (set of two) – $9.99 @ Kitchen Stuff Plus
Freshening up a pitcher of water? Mix juicy lemon and lime slices with cute citrus-shaped ice cubes for a glittering, frosty delight. Another fun idea? Freeze lemon tea and let these slowly melt into your drink for a delicious iced tea infusion.
Cool Beans Ice Cube Tray – $11.75 @
If you like your caffeine with an icy jolt, then you’ll know the pleasures of iced coffee – and how annoying it is to have the taste be watered down by the ice cubes that are there to keep your drink frosty. Enter this nifty tray, where you can pour your coffee into the molds and drop into your favourite java drink for a coffee treat thru-and-thru. Bonus idea? I spotted these fun vanilla bean ice cubes the other day, if you want to give your drink a flavoured spin.

We have a cute little ice cube tray that I was super excited about when we got it, but it’s a pain in the butt to use. Out of the ones listed here I like the Prepara Ice Balls best. #cgg
