All The Way Home I’ll Be Warm
Sometimes a good gift idea leaps up, smacks me on the head, and insanely exceeds my expectations. That would be the case with today’s pick, which also happens to follow one of my golden gift-giving rules: if you can find a way to combine a totally practical present with something absolutely gorgeous you’ll swoon over, it’s a total win/win. And with that, I’d like to introduce you to Holden. With roots in Oregon and snowboarding, this eco-considered brand is perhaps best known for their sporty-yet-stylish takes on outerwear. Having endured many a blustery Canadian winter, my mom taught me at a young age that outerwear is something worth investing in. After all, for half the year, it’s the first impression you’ll make on people. And can I just tell you, be prepared to have an impression made people. I’ve picked out my top 6 coats from the Holden collection, all of which would be amazing choices for under the tree. Note: prices may be different than the web links owing to exchange rates & such.
Bessette Jacket – $580 / $415
One of my favourite things about this brand is the details. If you look at this uber-cute ladies’ coat, you’ll probably immediately be attracted to the chic-yet-earthy colour blocks. But then take a closer look, and you’ll notice really fun extras – like the yoke seam around the neck, the matching snap buttons, or the asymmetrical hemline. The Ltd. edition coat on the far left comes with some extra special details, including a custom-designed oversized plaid pattern, and rainbow-flecked ‘neps’ on the chambray for a touch of girly cuteness. And of course, all of these coats are warm (but not heavy!) This is where the brand gets its eco-friendly rep from: the interior lining of the Bessette coat is made from S-Cafe, which itself is made by recycling coffee grounds and weaving it into a lightweight, fast-drying fabric.
Camden Jacket – $260
I fell for this coat because it just felt kind of universal. And by that I mean, universal by age – the utilitarian vibe means it’s not too hipster for your dad, but has a charming broken-in appeal for your boyfriend. And universal by style – the neutral colour and simple details means it’ll fit into just about any guy’s wardrobe. It’s probably a little casual for a top exec’s workday coat, but it’ll fly on the weekends just fine. And of course, universally usable for just about any time of year. The sherpa lining and flannel hood make for a snuggly light winter coat, while the coated canvas twill fabric means it’ll survive any fall or spring rainstorms. Finally the price makes it pretty universally accessible – like I said, outerwear is a worthy investment and this is among the worthiest.
Estelle Down jacket – $450
This chevron-seamed, cross-cropped puffer coat harkens back to Holden’s ski hill roots: the down filling is designed to keep you warm even when blasting down the slopes, and the sportier features like a powder skirt and pit vents can keep pace with even the most intrepid snow bunny. Then again, look closer and you’ll see plenty of style factor for the chalet-dweller as well: the vintage-inspired wool patch on the sleeve, scalloped hemline, and two-tone fabric work equally well in the city as they do when you’re carving down a mountain.
Caravan Jacket – $470
This military-inspired coat is the most industrious of the bunch, with serious heavy-duty performance features like 10K water resistance (more than the average human will ever need in their lifetime), oodles of spacious pockets for gizmos and gadgets, and Japanese-made zippers from renowned brand YKK. Of course, there’s goodies for city slickers as well, including a front zip pocket with a cord to let your headphones loose, so you can keep your iPod or SmartPhone handy and listen to tunes while walking the dog or catching the bus. The sleek-yet-masculine colour palette also works for any guy on your shopping list: whether he’s an outdoorsy type or a soccer dad.
Goodwin Cape – $580
I love this mash-up of street-savvy style and practical cosiness. The Goodwin Cape combines gingham wool with Kevlar along with arm flaps, a hand-warming pocket, and a hood to amp up the fash-factor. Meanwhile, you can actually stay warm with this unconventional take on winterwear, thanks to the warm sherpa lining and absolutely ridiculous 20k waterproof shell.
Sitka Jacket – $295
I’ll admit it. My love for colours may have factored into my decision to include the Sitka jacket. But rest assured, the bright sporty hues of this men’s coat (also available in dusky grey) weren’t the only selling feature. Take, for example, the subtle diamond-quilted pattern on the chest, the sleek lines of the pockets, and the seamed yoke. Also cool? The crazy waterproof and insulation powers that make it cozy enough to wear nothing but a t-shirt underneath, and still be able to brave the cold.
Wondering where you can snag a Holden coat of your own? The site’s handy store locator makes it easy to track down a retailer near you (typically independent sport / skate shops), but for best results, I recommend using their website to guarantee the style and colour you want is available in your size.
