And Warm Woolen Mittens

I figured I better knock out the next entry in ‘My Favourite Things’ series before winter evaporates on us. Oh who am I kidding, it’s only February! We’ve still got at least a few weeks of unpredictable snowy, slushy weather that still means business when it comes to winter wear. To that end, I’m featuring five fabulous pairs of warm, woolen mittens – as the song goes. Mitts for the record, make a wonderful gift for just about anyone. They’re typically quite affordable, always in need, and don’t require as much fashion sense as picking out a sweater or jacket your loved one might love.

Olympic Collection Striped MittensOlympic Collection Striped Mittens – $10 @ The Bay
I didn’t have a chance to feature these during the holiday season as I typically do, but here they are – the latest incarnation of 2010’s most ubiquitous fashion accessory, this time rendered in candy cane-esque red & white stripes. The Bay’s mittens are a perennial celebration of our nation’s athletes and our national pride, all wrapped up in a pretty little price tag.

LL Bean Rag Wool GlovesRagg Wool Gloves – $29.95 @ L.L. Bean
Sure these are gloves and not mittens, technically, but these hand warmers are so perfect and versatile for the guy in your life I couldn’t help but include them. Made from super soft lambs wool, lined with polyester insulation, and coated with durable deerskin, these puppies will keep you looking stylish and rugged at the same time.

Lauren McCalmont For ASOS Foil Print Broken Argyle Borg Lined Mittens

Foil Print Broken Argyle Borg Lined Mittens – $21.83 (on sale!) @ ASOS
Personally I use my winter accessories as an excuse to liven up my typically quite neutral black or gold or brown parka. These cheerful mitts do that on multiple levels – the bold colour blocks and gold foil print make for a standout pair of mittens that’ll still keep your tips toasty thanks to the faux sheepskin lining.

Kids Ark Polar Bear MittsKids Ark Polar Bear Mittens – $21.99 @ Winnipeg Outfitters
Of course there had to be an entry in here for the kids, and Winnipeg Outfitters’ line-up of animal-inspired hand warmers make it way easier to stuff your little ones’ paws when they’re fighting with you over the number of layers they insist upon. Although I zeroed in on the Polar Bear incarnation, a menagerie of zoo animals is available from Moose and Beaver to Rainbow Monkeys and Bunnies.

Cashmere Echo Touch GlovesCashmere Echo Touch Glove – $98 @ Echo Design
Oh yes, these are expensive, but it’s cashmere kittens – once you’ve touched it, you’ll get it. Then again, if the price point makes you balk, Echo Design also offers an extremely similar line at a fraction of the price (and as of writing this post, all winter gear was on sale for 25% off using the coupon code WINTER25). What makes these particular gloves special is those little grey finger points that allow you to use your SmartPhone (or tablet, I suppose) without removing your gloves. Ingenious, and one of the most-touted winter accessory features of the year.

Knit Glove Drink Holder

(BONUS) Knit Glove Drink Holder – $28 @ Urban Outfitters
It’s not really a pair of mittens per se, but I couldn’t resist including this woolen beer koozie that allows you to keep a grip on your favourite ice beverage when it’s icy outside. Perfect for mid-winter bonfires, outdoor festivals and concerts, and even those crisp fall and spring nights when you’re partying it up outdoors.

LOVE IS ART Bonus Entry: Just leave me a comment below telling me which of these fine digit-warmers is your top pick!
