Find of the Month: Ezensa Skin Care
As part of my pledge to present a greener, cleaner approach to beauty and body care gift ideas, I’m kicking things off by introducing you to a great Canadian company that’s doing things right – Ezensa Skin Care. For a primer on why what we put on our skin is so flipping important, be sure to check out their great FYI section...but let’s start with three pretty chilling facts. Fact: at least 80% of what we put onto our skin is absorbed into our bodies (and bloodstreams). Fact: the FDA and Health Canada do not regulate what goes into ‘cosmetics’ – which includes all of those lotions, potions, and cosmetics you use on a daily basis. Fact: those unpronounceable chemicals that make up most labels are actually known hormone disruptors, and in some cases, have been known to cause cancer and other serious health issues. The good news? Brands like Ezensa offer a ridiculously simple ingredient list with a completely natural, and for the most part organic, mix of oils and butters. The next time you’re searching for a gift with mass appeal, skip the drugstore and consider shopping at this clean, green, eco-friendly virtual boutique.
Body Butters – $24.95 each
There are actually five body butters available in the Ezensa line, each of which offers benefits for different skin types – whether you suffer from acne-prone or dry skin, or simply want a normal, everyday moisturizer, these ultra-smoothing butters are just the ticket. The ingredient lists are almost ridiculously simple – 10 ingredients or less anyone? – and you’ll notice that none of them contain water. Ezensa has a whole manifesto on being water-free. Namely, water doesn’t actually absorb into skin. While it certainly contributes to a ‘smoother’ feel for your product, it can actually dry out your skin and cause an imbalance in the product makeup, which in turn relies on the introduction of harsh chemicals to keep the item ‘shelf stable’. The long and the short of it is, our skin is naturally laden with oils – and those should really be what the basis of your skincare contains. Bonus: if you want something super custom, you can fill out a quick questionnaire and Ezensa will actually whip up a batch just for you.
Baby Balm – $16.95
We pay a lot of attention to baby-proofing our homes, but what about the ingredients we’re bringing in through the front door? Even Johnson’s Baby Shampoo was cited in 2011 for containing extremely toxic chemicals (seriously, do a Google search) like Formaldehyde, and we all know that babies have the softest, most plush skin that also happens to ripe for irritation. Ezensa’s baby balm is stripped of literally any essential oil that may cause a reaction, and as a bonus, it also helps prevent diaper rash. If you jump on the green beauty bandwagon, make sure you start the next generation on it from birth, so all natural will simply feel natural. Makes a perfect baby shower present.
Soaps – $4.95 each
Although most people use liquid shower gels these days, a good ol’ fashioned bar of soap is really an ace choice. For one, all of that luscious lathering foam you love so much? It’s actually generated by a toxic chemical. For another, soap bars are actually a better choice for the environment – just think, less plastic bottles whether by the tap or in the shower are always a smart choice, as plastic is the number one nemesis of the landfills. Ezensa offers 10 different varieties of soap, all 100% natural and gentle on the skin, each infused with a pleasant, invigorating smell. Stock up on ’em for stocking stuffers, hostess gifts, or thank-you presents – I love ‘artisanal’ soap as a gift because it looks more expensive than it really is.
Body Balm – $21.95
I have really naturally pale skin, and I’m used to slathering on the sunscreen. However I also just read that not only are the active ingredients in most sunscreens quite harmful, apparently we’re all a little quick to blocking out the sun. Apparently it’s recommended we get at least 20 minutes in the brightness before we start shielding out the sun’s rays. This Body Balm from Ezensa is a happy compromise: the blend of oils, butters, and waxes makes for a super nourishing treat for your skin – one that also offers some ‘natural’ SPF protection. Use it in the winter to drench dry skin in moisture, and apply it in the summer as a lightweight pseudo-sunscreen when you’re taking the dog for a walk or hitting the park with your kids.

My skin is so dry after this winter, I’d love to try the lavender body butter.
Since I always forget to use “proper” facial soap, I think the ‘artisanal’ soap would be a good product for me to have in my shower.
The Body Balm sounds so yummy and exciting i would love to try it out.
They all look good! But if I had to choose…it would be a tie between baby balm, and body balm. I agree with Alison K….can’t wait for the line of lip balms. Commented and liked 🙂
Cinnamon is my favorite fragrance, coconut and pineapple combo would smell soo nice. I luv the smell of the sunscreen in that fragrance. I have a cinnamon spray and bodyoil. Its different and who doesn’t like the smell of cinnamon. My body is so dry from the winter, nice to have a product that helps aliviate the dryness and smell great too.
I would love to try the Body Balm or Body Butter for myself and my 17 year old daughter. My daughter has the driest hands and they look like sandpaper sometimes. She does use creams but they only help a little bit. Would love her to try your product to see what happens. She would prefer something with not too strong a fragrance. thanks for the oppportunity.
