Pantone released their colour of the year a few months back, so I’ve spent the last little bit identifying items in wonderful Emerald – a rich, jewel-toned green with a dollop of turquoise to make it wearable by just about anyone on earth. What’s interesting to me about this particular interpretation of Emerald is it’s actually capturing the colour of an actual gemstone being hit by the light – as opposed to a deep, forest green. Anyway I’ve picked out a bevy of Emerald-hued products (and yes, for the purposes of this post, Emerald shall be capitalized as last year’s Tangerine Tango was) that would make fabulous, of-the-moment presents for every person on your list.
Three Layer Scarf – $30 @ Indigo
If you simply want to dip your toe in the Emerald trend, consider this lightweight fashion scarf that practically screams spring with its ombre shades of the green hue. A perfect choice for mom or your best friend.
‘Ming Vase’ Stackable Dishes Set – $218 @ MINT Interiors
Sure it may look like an innocuous white vase when on display, but a closer look reveals a full set of melamine serving dishes with an Asian-inspired pattern. Put it on display in your dining room and wow guests when you snag one to serve up an appetizer.
Suede Ballet Flats – $59.95 @ H&M
Add a colour pop to a pair of basic black cropped pants or freshen up a breezy white sundress with this super cute and classic pair of ballet flats. A wonderful choice for your sister or best friend’s birthday gift as we round the corner into spring.
Victorinox Swiss Army Limited Edition ‘Sneakers’ Classic SD – $26 (see Swiss Army site for stores)
For a somewhat more practical twist on the trend, why not invest in this sleek, pop art-inspired Swiss Army knife? Featuring the usual accoutrements and accessories designed to get you out of a jam (nail file, screwdriver, blade, toothpick, scissors, key ring, and tweezers) + a fun retro design, this is a hip gift for the young ‘uns in particular. A note on that very cool design? In 2012 (ahead of the Colour of the Year announcement thank you very much), Victorinox actually ran a crowdsourcing competition that netted over 1,000 designs worldwide for the iconic knife. The top 10 voted-on concepts were actually produced in limited runs, including this beauty.
Crepe Dress – $79 @ Jacob
A perusal of the racks at Jacob highlights some fetching frocks and blazers in various hues of Emerald – although this teal-tinged one was most on-point for the general colour story of this post. Not only is the colour a stunner, the dress is pretty much universally flattering and would make a perfect birthday gift for your wife.
Emerald Clutch – $63.20 @ Jes Switaj
To me, this clutch is one of the neatest items on this list because it manages to run the spectrum of Pantone’s light-refracting blue-green alongside the darker, richer jewel tones we typically associate with the shade. This chic silk clutch will immediately signal to others in the know that you’re following the Pantone trend, and provide an instant statement piece for any evening outfit.
Emmy Demi Wedges – $250 @ Tory Burch
Although definitely pricier than the H&M flats pictured above, these cute mid-height wedges are the epitome of style for summer weather. Of course like most Tory Burch gear, it features her signature medallion front & centre. Chi-chi-chic!
Pantone Coffee Mug – $25 @ the Pantone Store
Pantone purists can get in on the act with one of the brand’s signature collectibles. My pick is the giant Emerald-chip coffee mug packed in a collector’s box. About 50% of the designers I know own at least one of these mugs – why not make it an annual tradition to upgrade with the times?
Geometric Trellis Pillow Cover – $47.40 @Motif Pillows
To me, one of the strongest applications of Emerald is to home decor. The colour looks smashing against black and white, and feels very of-the-moment. Give it a whirl by investing in a new set of pillow covers for your couch, like these modern chic graphic ones. Not only will it looks crisp, it also just instantly evokes summer.
SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE Colour of the Year Collection – $10 – $82 @ Sephora
The other ‘official’ find on this list comes from Sephora, who is the exclusive partner for the wildly popular SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE beauty line. Last year’s debut Tangerine Tango pieces were so popular, one item was sold every seconds during the launch month. As a result the Emerald line has generated a pile of buzz and an expanded product line that mixes playful cosmetics with showstopping accessories. The focus this year is really on the eyes (cause green lips ain’t pretty) – with 3 eyeliner types, a tinted mascara, two eyeshadow palettes, glitter dust, and even faux lashes with a sparkly emerald strip to make your peepers pop. Still a little bold for you? Try out the fun polishes or invest in a new luxe brush set in this of-the-moment colour. Beyond the bang-on shade matching, the other amazing thing about the line is the way it simply evokes Pantone – from the sleek packaging to the way the makeup cases are shaped like Pantone chips (and have a fun magnetic feature to reveal hidden mirrors on the palettes). Whether your gal pal is a designer type that fully gets the Pantone reference or simply looks radiant in Emerald, stock up my friends, before the line zips outta stores.
