Human Nature

With Earth Day just around the corner, I thought it might be fun to do a post with five green-themed gift ideas. Although I already touched on a few earth-friendly choices over the month, these items are perfect ways to mark the occasion, or simply to bestow on a sustainable-minded pal. Enjoy!

Wherever WaterWherever Water – $24.99 @ Good Planet
If you haven’t read the ridiculous stats about the costs – both financial and environmental – of bottled water, do yourself a favour and read up. It’s mind-boggling why we’d bother to pay buckets of money for something that’s naturally abundant; but hey, if you find it hard to down water period, let this glass & BPA-free plastic water bottle be a lifesaver. It comes with a built-in a juice strainer, so you can infuse your everyday water with lemons, or other citrus splashes, to ensure you’re staying hydrated. Makes a great gift for your gym buddy, or your coworker.

RePEaT Utensil SetsRePEaT Cutlery Sets – $14.97 @ Fenigo
These reusable cutlery sets – including a fork, knife, spoon, and chopsticks – tick a few green boxes off at once. For one, they replace disposable plastic cutlery. For another, they come in a handy and sanitary carrying case that you can toss into your lunchbox, briefcase, or purse to ensure your utensils are always at the ready for those last-minute lunches out. And of course, they’re made of recycled PET plastic, to help close that all-important loop. Tuck them in your kids lunches’ and start a trend at school.

Neon Green PIGGY-BACK-UPNeon Green Rebel Yell Backpack – $119
In a nutshell, these solar-powered backpacks are absolutely killer. Tote them as you carry on with your daily chores, and use them to power up or charge your gizmos and gadgets when you need them. Neon Green makes a pretty big line of bags with built-in solar panels, so you can easily find one that matches your personal style and needs. My favourite use? Pick one up for your kid that’s about to backpack through Europe, or spend their summer working in a developing country. It’ll help keep them connected without using extra energy. Smart.

Hu2 StickersEco Reminder Stickers – $12.92+ @ Hu2
These playful stickers are a friendly reminder about the ‘cost’ of energy use. They’re available in tons of different styles, and can actually be applied to your shower, around outlets, surrounding light switches, or even by your recycling bin. Buy a set to help educate your kids on the importance of energy and water efficiency, or put them up around the office to add a quirky touch to your building’s decor. Whenever you’re tired of your decal, no worries – they’re actually made from recyclable plastic, to ensure this piece of wall art doesn’t end up polluting our landfills.

The Nature of Things

The Nature of Things Collection – $9.99+ @ The CBC Shop
I’ve yet to meet someone that doesn’t have a smile of pride on their face when they talk about lifelong eco activist David Suzuki. As Canada’s most recognized green warrior, and the long-running host of The Nature of Things, I’m psyched to point you in the direction of a new collection of merch featuring a retro 1970s Suzuki alongside some modern branding for the nature series. Don a tee for whatever green event you’re attending on Earth Day, or gift that idealist student sibling, nephew, or niece of yours with a travel mug or tote bag. Of course, all of The Nature Of Things collection takes into account sustainability: the items are made from organic or recycled materials, and encourage eco-friendly practices (down with disposable cups, throwaway plastic bags, and non-organic clothing!)

David Suzuki T-ShirtsI kind of swooned for the David Suzuki tees pictured above right on the spot, and I’m psyched to announce that one of you folks will be the lucky winner of a his & hers The Nature of Things shirt collection! Here’s how to enter:

1) Visit the CBC Shop website before May 1st and leave me a comment below with your favourite item from their Eco Boutique. Note that this month, with every purchase made from the shop, $1 will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund.

2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around May 2nd to select the winners, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.
