Away We Grow

What happens when you combine exotic, certified organic ingredients from the Amazon with bath and body care products we use every day? The answer is pretty much sheer genius. IKOVE (meaning ‘grow’) is a Brazilian brand with a Canadian presence that, through extensive research and careful planning, has developed a line of truly organic products, as evidenced by the prestigious (and very hard to come by for beauty brands) ECOCERT and USDA Organic certifications they carry. Not only do your products have to have a balance of 95% or more organic plant components to earn these designations, they also need to avoid the big, bad toxic no-no’s like petrochemicals and parabens. IKOVE passes with flying colours, and today I’m psyched to introduce you to a few of their awesome product lines and unique ingredients (with pronunciation guides so you can sound uber suave when describing how you got your hair and skin looking so flawless).

IKOVE Chocolate AcaiFirst up we have the brand’s Açai Chocolate offering. Açai (ah-sigh-ee) berries have been hailed in recent years as beauty all-stars thanks to their crazy anti-aging antioxidant properties. Lush chocolate (or cocoa) doubles up the antioxidant power to help reverse UV damage, exfoliate, and prevent fine line formation. Cocoa is also extremely hydrating, so when combined with the seemingly magical properties of the Açai berry, you’re looking at head-to-toe nourishment for your hair and your body (plus a pretty delicious smell I might add) The Açai Chocolate line is one of the most extensive that IKOVE offers, with products for your hair, face, and skin ($32+) both inside and outside of the shower. Did I mention it’s 100% vegan? Yup yup!

IKOVE CupuaçuIf dry hair is your beauty nemesis, it may be because you simply haven’t had Cupuaçu (coop-ew-us-ew) in your life yet. This exotic ingredient comes from fruit trees that can be found along the river basin of the Brazilian Amazon. Related to cacao, the rich butter inside these fruits is chockful of phytosterols and polyphenols, both of which are really just fancy ways of saying they pack a serious nourishing punch for dry, broken tresses. It’s also incredibly hydrating, trapping 240% more water than lanolin (a fatty secretion harvested from sheep that appears in many a beauty product), giving your hair a glossy and plumped-up appearance.

IKOVE AcerolaAt the other end of the spectrum, we have Acerola (ah-sir-o-la) – a mild-scented berry rich in mineral salts that are great for those suffering from oily hair and skin. Like the other wonder ingredients in IKOVE’s line-up, Acerola is packed with antioxidants that can seriously stop time, reverse inflammation, and keep your skin looking toned and taut. Because of it’s multi-functioning properties, Acerola can be found as a primary ingredient in a number of IKOVE’s products, including their ultraluxe hand cream ($29).

IKOVE CopaibaSpeaking of multi-purpose ingredients, the Copaiba (co-pa-ee-ba) tree has been tapped (literally) for its luscious oils that are used by indigenous peoples of the Amazon as an anti-inflammatory remedy for everything from eczema to insect bites. If you’ve got sensitive or even scarred skin, this is the product for you – its actually been shown to help calm even the most easily irritated skin. Because it’s also great at providing healing properties for dry or cracked skin, Copaiba plays a starring role in IKOVE’s awesome foot cream ($26) – a must for summer footwear season.

IKOVE Babaçu

Finally, we round things off through this international tour of ingredients with Babaçu (bah-bah-soo), which also comes from a Brazilian fruit tree. Like coconut oil, it’s a super powerful moisturizer. However, unlike coconut oil, it doesn’t leave a greasy residue or build-up with repeated use. It actually gets right into your skin and pores rather than sitting on top of them, which is great because the ingredients are all natural, so you don’t have to worry about absorbing anything harmful. It’s what makes IKOVE’s hand cream so powerful and long-lasting (meaning you can wash your hands and still feel nourished). Like many of the other ingredients featured in this post, Babaçu can be found in several of IKOVE’s products, including its own feature conditioner (alongside the ultra-rich properties of Avocado).

There are a host of other natural, organic, mighty ingredients in IKOVE’s products, but the five I’ve featured above are among the most unique and new to us North American consumers. Like with the other natural care product lines I feature, these really just make fantastic anytime gifts. The next time you’re planning to purchase a nice bar of soap or bath gift set for someone, consider a natural alternative. You’ll not only be doing the planet a service (those runoff suds have to go somewhere), you’ll also be keeping your pal’s skin free from not-so-awesome ingredients. IKOVE’s online store does ship to Canada and is your best source for all things natural.

I hope you all enjoyed learning a bit more about this awesome brand and I strongly encourage you to indulge in their lush, inspired products. In the meantime, I’m giving away a $115+ Açai Chocolate prize package including a shampoo, conditioner and body moisturizer. Interested in getting lathered up? Here’s how to enter:
