Techno Logic
Sometimes some folks come up with techie ideas that are so clever it almost makes you go duhhh. They also make for great gifts – for young folks obsessed with staying in touch and for older people that simply love the latest and greatest gadgets. Today I’ve picked out five smart-thinking ideas that you may want to add to your own wish list, or hand off to someone else.
OnHand 8GB Flash Drives – $23.95 each
Leave it to a student to come up with a clever way to hang onto your most important data and documents. OnHand was conceived by Andrew Kitzenberg as part of a school assignment at Babson Client. Having lost or left behind one too many flash drives (that is, portable hard drive), he was searching for a better way to keep tabs on his drives. The answer? Wrap it around your wrist. The piece that actually ‘snaps’ the drive to your wrist also serves as a protector for the fragile USB plug. No more losing your drive – even if you’re the forgetful type, if you wear your bracelet every day you’ll likely notice when it’s missing (sort of like those who wear watches or wedding rings) much sooner than if you’d otherwise toss it in your bag. Available in over a dozen marbled and solid colours, it’s easy to find a punchy option that suits your personal style.
Fitbit Force – $130
Instead of fiddling around with manual apps and journals, why not let technology do the work for you when it comes to tracking out just how much work (and rest) you’re getting? The Fitbit Force comes in two neutral colours, fits comfortably around your wrist for 24/7 wear, and is even water resistant. It’s the latest gadget from Fitbit, with new upgrades over their last model (the Flex). For one, it functions as a watch, stopwatch, and timer. For another, it syncs seamlessly with your Bluetooth-enabled phone. It tracks everything from how many floors you’ve climbed to how many steps you’ve taken – as well as calories burned, active minutes, and how well you’ve slept. It’s a must-have for anyone trying to take a serious look at their healthcare and well-being, so consider nudging a family member in its direction come holiday gift-giving season.
Dark Energy Reservoir – $129
It may have the same approximate size and shape as your precious SmartPhone, but in reality this nifty device is designed to simply help your phone along. It stores enough power to fully charge up your iPhone or Android phone for up to a week (or about 4.5 charges) and works just as fast as plugging into a wall or computer. With two USB ports and compatibility with any USB-friendly device (including ereaders, tablets, etc.) this is a must-have gadget if you’re constantly on the go with business meetings or global travel and don’t want to rely on the possibility of encountering a usable plug. Smart.
theQ Cameras – $199 each
Not to beat a dead horse – but I love colour, and I love that these petite, social media-enabled cameras come in such a fun array of shades from pretty vintage pastels to modern bold tones. Anyway, what really separates a theQ camera from the rest of the pack is their built-in 3G access that automatically uploads all of your photos to a cloud service for you to edit, store, and share as desired – basically saving you time like Instagram but with a better quality picture. You can also double tap your selected photo to automatically upload it to any social networks you configure in off the hop, making things quite literally a snap!
OnHand Card Case – $24.99 each
One of the most-promoted features of the latest incarnation of the iPhone (the 5 or 5S) is its slim profile…if you want to cut down on pocket bulk altogether, the Card Case is an ingenious solution that both protects your precious phone and allows you to stash a few critical cards at the same time. I love the idea of this for guys and gals on the go – it’s particularly useful for nights when you’re hitting the clubs and don’t want to tote along a bulky purse or load up your pants. And with six solid shades to choose from, you don’t have to worry about guessing whether your giftee likes a particular pattern. A good choice to accompany the actual gift of a phone, particularly for protective parents that are shelling out for the thing.
