Dude, Where’s My Gift?

After writing about gift ideas for gal pals the other day, I thought it was only fair I do the same for the dudes. This particular gift guide takes some explaining. The best way I can express it is these are gifts guys shouldn’t be afraid to give to other guys. For one thing, they won’t blow the budget. For another thing, they aren’t ‘weirdly’ intimate picks like cologne or cozy sweaters. This isn’t to say a gal can’t give a guy one of the picks from this list, but these were *specifically* curated for the purposes of brothers buying for brothers, guy friends buying for guy friends, dads buying for sons, and well, you get the picture. Shall we?

Vintage Vinyl JournalsVintage Vinyl Journals – $34.99+
For the busy student, budding musician / writer, or simply the everyday list writer, these journals quite literally rock. The front cover of each journal is made from a hand-sourced vintage album, while the back cover is created from the album’s actual cover art. The result is a handmade, one-of-a-kind journal (although rest assured, you can buy ‘repeats’ of the journals as they’re re-sourced) that also happens to be super eco-friendly. The journals themselves are packed with over 200 pages of unlined paper so you can sketch the day away or dream up the lyrics to your first #1 hit. I particularly love these because it gives you the chance to tailor your gift to your guy pal’s favourite artist or era – from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles to Fleet Foxes, and everything in between.

Homo Sapien Chalkboard SkullHomo Sapien Chalkboard Skull – $46 @ Colossal Shop
Trade on his zombie love with these creative chalkboard skulls, available in half a dozen colours. Place it on your buddy’s desk or front hall table so he can jot down reminders to keep his keys handy or head over to your place for the big game on the weekend. Every inch of the durable polyurethane skull can be written on, and simply wiped off as you would with a normal chalkboard. Pretty cool for science nerds as well.

JackedPackJackedPack Subscription – From $11.99 / month (+shipping at $7.50 and up)
If you are a gymaholic and have a buddy or two that’s challenging you to keep pace with his own muscle mass, consider gifting him with the power of getting pumped up, with a JackedPack supplement subscription. Start by selecting the size of JackedPack you want at a few different price points, then sit back (or you know, do some curls) while a package of the latest sports nutrition goodies are carefully curated and delivered straight to your door. With options to customize what you get and around eight different products to test out each month, this is an ace choice that also feels pretty darn thoughtful for the lovable meathead in your life.

Pizza Boss Pizza CutterPizza Boss Pizza Cutter – $17.95 @ Cadosphere
If his idea of a personal chef is the pizza delivery guy, consider this nifty pizza cutter as a perfect gift under $20. Shaped like a power saw, it’ll give your best friend extra grip while cutting his homemade (shock!) or store-bought pizza to perfection at your next hangout. Not only does it look pretty darn neat, it’s also pretty darn tough – cutting through layers of toppings and cheese with serious ease.

Marshall Minor HeadphonesMarshall Minor Headphones – $75 @ London Drugs and select Hudson’s Bay Stores
It only makes sense that a brand with over 50 years of rock music history (through their line of amps and other stage equipment) should be extending their reach into the world of headphones. These stylish black and gold ear buds come with 3 different pad sizes and a signature locking mechanism to ensure a perfect fit – whether you’re rocking out on a commute into the office or while walking your pooch through the park. They also come equipped with a microphone so when you phone your buddy to ask how he likes his new earphones, he can chat to you right through them on his phone.

Campfire CuisineCampfire Cuisine: Gourmet Recipes for the Great Outdoors by Robin Donovan – $17.95 (list)
If one of your annual traditions with your guy pals is to set up camp in the great outdoors, elevate your next excursion with this clever ‘cookbook’. With over 100 recipes, the book is designed for outdoor meals at home and abroad, with shopping list and equipment selection tips to make your prep work a snap. From Salmon with Balsamic Fig Sauce to Grilled Vegetable Salad with Goat Cheese, these recipes may sound (and taste) upscale, but they’re crafted by an avid camper that knows the limitations of cooking in the great outdoors. With this book, you CAN do better than a weenie roast.

90s Music Trivia Game90s Music Trivia Game – $12 @ Drake General Store
If you and your bro aren’t splurging on one another, this is a neat, fun gift that’ll test his 90s music prowess. Featuring 100 trivia cards in a boom box-shaped package, this is the perfect host gift to tote along when you’re attending a good friend’s ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater’ party. Crack it open and test everyone’s knowledge on everything from Will Smith and the Spice Girls to Aerosmith and Green Day. Good, clean, affordable fun.

DropCatchDropCatch Bottle Openers – $60
The static bottle opener has been having a comeback over the last few years, with many a bar / counter / workbench / picnic table being affixed with a permanent opener. But the DropCatch takes things a step further, by attaching a stainless steel opener to a piece of real wood that also houses a pretty heavy-duty magnet. That magnets job? To immediately snap up the cap from your favourite brew as it’s cracked open. The regular DropCatch can handle up to 52 caps at a time (for a surprisingly artful look), while you can also upgrade to a more powerful magnet that’ll take care of even more. When your collection is booming, simply scoop ’em up and throw them in recycling. A really, really cool piece that’ll round out his bar and / or man cave.

Breaking Bad PostersBreaking Bad Posters – From $29.45
Although the beloved AMC show may have brought down the curtains this past fall, legions of fan boys are still reminiscing about the legendary Hiesenberg and his hapless sidekick Jesse Pinkman. If his apartment or office could use a boost of style that’s still in line with his personal interests, these graphic print posters are pretty spectacularly done – the outlines of the two main characters’ faces are actually rendered with lines of type depicting famous lines from the show that also speak deeply to each persona. Unexpected yet ultra cool.

Home Alone Christmas Sweater Crewneck SweatshirtHome Alone Christmas Sweater Crewneck Sweatshirt – $39.99 @ Chitown Clothing
I actually bought this sweater as an early Christmas gift for my husband (he already has it, no spoilers). Our favourite holiday movie is Home Alone – it’s one of the few that gets a rewatch year after year – and this mock ugly Christmas sweater that channels a famous line from the film is absolutely perfect for any fellow fans. If you want to trim the budget a bit, it also comes in a more affordable tee-shirt version as well. Funny and festive, it’s also a great way to send your best bro some holiday wishes.
