Trend Watch: Tropicana
Traditionally relegated to the retirement set, tropical prints and tiki inspirations are popping up everywhere these days – giving us a taste of summer while we still trundle on through spring.
From L to R
SEPHORA COLLECTION Moonshadow Baked Palette ‘In The Tropics’ – $32 @ Sephora – Culling inspiration from remote islands, this palette of pretty baked shadows calls to mind shimmering sands, blazing sun rays and the cool hue of the ocean under the moon’s glow. Naturally as a baked palette, you can also dip your brush into water (ocean or otherwise) to intensify these hues.
Tropical Trail Sandal – $149.99 @ ModCloth – The price may be a little gasp-worthy, but so are the shoes my friends. These stunning royal blue strappy sandals will add a pop of colour to a lightweight white sundress or some chic style when paired with a coverup en route to the beach. For a more affordable taste of the tropics, consider the $39.99 Tropical Trek Flats, also from ModCloth.
1969 Tropical Always Skinny Skinny Jeans – $108 @ Gap – Patterned pants are kind of a big deal this season, and for good reason; they’re surprisingly easy to wear with all of those basics you’ve already got. This bold tropical pair would look snappy with everything from a simple black tee to a dramatic oversized sheer blouse. Not sure of your giftee’s size? Pick up a gift card instead.
Thin Tropical Socks – $16 @ Simons – Another trend that’s cropping up this season is the pairing of nylon-weight socks with closed-toe high heels, Dorothy style. Give your ensemble an infusion of the tropics by donning a pair of these festive socks, any season!
Dooney & Bourke Small Domed Satchel – $159 @ Hudson’s Bay – Something about this beautiful bag simply calls to mind hot, humid days. The neutral white, brown and khaki green will pair well with just about any ensemble while allowing you to stash your essentials. A wonderful option for Mother’s Day or a young woman’s birthday.
Tropical Wayfarer Sunglasses – $4.99 @ Forever 21 – Give your look a tiny tip to the tropics with a pair of fun sunnies. Obviously these probably aren’t the best in actually protecting your eyes, but if you’re jettisoning yourself from point A to point B, a sleek pair of shades are all you need. A fun find for a friend’s birthday bash.
AEO Tropical Cap – $17.69 @ American Eagle – Even guys can get into the trend with a simple black ball cap emblazoned with a floral brim. More surfer boy than feminine, pick this one up for your favourite nephew or for your boyfriend to keep the sun out of his eyes whether he’s hitting the beach or hitting the links.
