Dear Ol’ Dad

As promised this week is Father’s Day week, and thus my big Father’s Day special post had to be rolling out at some point. After much fanfare, here it is friends – a roundup of great gift ideas for your husband, son, brother, or of course, your dad. As long as they serve as a parent in some capacity, they’re worthy of one of these fantastic Father’s Day gift ideas for Canadians.

Breville Crisp Crust Pizza MakerBreville Crispy Crust Pizza Maker – $199 @ Hudson’s Bay
Find me the guy that doesn’t love biting into a piece of ooey, gooey pizza and I’ll call them a liar! Especially after serving up a slice from this innovative at-home pizza maker that gives you perfectly crisped crust, whether you’re into thin, regular, or thick pizza dough. How does it work, you ask? Simple: it heats up the top and bottom pizza stones to temperatures of 660°, replicating the cooking process of an old-fashioned brick oven. It may be a tad pricy to splash out on now – but think of all the money you’ll save by not ordering in greasy, soggy, lukewarm (not to mention unhealthy) pizza from takeout!

L'Occitane Eau De CadeL’Occitane Eau De Cade Eau De Toilette – $56 for 100ml
This one is doubly cool (and cute). For one thing, it’s an oh-so-chic, rustic scent that mixes together earthy cedar wood and cade wood with bright poppy notes of bergamot (an uplifting essential oil), pink pepper (one of my fave fragrance notes) and citrus (for a zesty finish). For another, that titular cade wood is actually symbolic of a tenacious character, tradition and generosity, and is passed down between generations of Provencal shepherds. So sons, treat your dads nicely with this sweet gesture of familial solidarity.

The PuckOpenerThe PuckOpener – $12 each @ Buffalo BottleCraft
Hockey and beer – are there two more Canadian things that go together? As the playoff season comes to a close this month, give dad easy access to his favourite brews with a cool conversation starter: bottle openers made from real hockey pucks and emblazoned with cool, retro-inspired designs. This is a fantastic pick for the casual Father’s Day family; at this price point, you can even throw in a six-pack (or a 24) to keep dad satiated, no matter what his Dad’s day activities may include. Also makes a fantastic stocking stuffer for you early bird shoppers…

Carnivore ClubCarnivore Club – From $50 per Month
Get your laughs out now that the vegetarian blogger is writing about this – but admittedly, I think this is a pretty cool gift idea for the meat-eating dad, especially because it’s Canadian! Each month, a faux-wood box appears on your doorstep, packed with cured meats on a particular theme, like French Charcuterie or Italian Salumi. Insider info on the unique practices that go into each culinary delight, as well as preparation instructions, are included, giving dad access to an easy, gourmand DIY feast. Subscriptions are $55 for a single month if you just want to give it a whirl, or $50 per month if you sign up for a longer period of time.

Michael Jordan The Life by Roland Lazenby

Michael Jordan: The Life by Roland Lazenby – $33 (list)
Guys don’t have beach reads, but they won’t say no to kicking back with an engaging book while chilling on the beach or relaxing at the cabin. Enter Roland Lazenby’s definitive summation of the world’s greatest basketball player, Michael Jordan. This monster of a book covers every aspect of Michael Jordan’s life (even dating back to his grandparents), including how the game changed Michael, but more importantly, how this titan on the court changed the game. Whether or not you’re a Jordan fan, this book is ideal for the basketball fan as it dives deep into sponsorships, the elevation of megabrands like Nike, and so much more.

ECCO Contoured

ECCO Contoured Plain Toe Tie Shoe – $225
If you’ve got a stylish dad on your hands, why not get him a cheerful pair of new shoes to don throughout the summer? This stunning new style from ECCO features a bold, contrast sole (with matching laces, natch) and is made from smooth, uniquely coloured leather. It’s the perfect pair to wear with a formal suit for those inevitable weddings, to the office, or even just for a nice brunch out with the family. Like say, for Father’s Day.

Stanley Tools Click and Connect ToolboxStanley Tools Click ‘N’ Connect Toolbox – $39.99 @ Rona
Isn’t it time your handy dad got rid of his old rusting metal clunker in exchange for a sleeker, lighter, yet no less sturdy toolbox? If that’s the case, this smart stacking system from Stanley Tools is a great pick. It’s comprised of multiple units that can be stacked and snapped together, giving you extra storage space without taking up tons of room. Whether dad is busy in the garage, always fixing things up around the home, or even interested in getting in touch with his artsy side, this smart storage solution also includes removable dividers to make it easy to customize for your needs.

Scrabble Vintage EditionPremier Edition Scrabble – $199 @ Restoration Hardware
Every dad’s favourite word game actually harkens all the way back to the 1940s. Restoration Hardware has released an exclusive version of the game that channels the era without changing the rules. Made from solid hardwood and featuring a rotating turntable for easy play, dad will appreciate the attention to detail in everything from the raised grid to the diecast metal accents to the fabric-wrapped scorebook so you can keep tabs on which family member truly has the best grip on our lexicon.

sensoglove

SensoGlove – $82.85 @ Amazon.ca
If dad’s looking to improve his golf game, this technologically enhanced glove may help him out. Sweatproof and made from high quality leather, this unique glove monitors the tension of your grip on the golf club. Instinctively, when we want to blast a golf ball down the fairway, we tend to tighten our grip – when in fact, that tension can slow down your swing and make it choppy. This glove gives both audio and visual feedback on your grip, helping dad loosen up and enjoy his game – especially when he creams the competition.

The Adventurer's Power StationThe Adventurer’s Power Station – $199.95 @ Hammacher Schlemmer
For the dad that likes to disappear every now and again, this innovative portable charging station will ensure he can always stay connected if you really need him to be. Ideal for stashing away in the trunk of your car, dad’s RV, or the family boat, the mega long-lasting battery contained within can fire up everything from a GPS system to a tablet to a cell phone – multiple times over! – when fully charged. You can also purchase an additional solar panel ($199) to keep the power station powered up when camping, backpacking, or hiding out in the wilderness.

Father's Day Prize Package

Finally, for all you guys out there (and of course, their wives, daughters and mothers), I’ve got a great prize package that should be placed into the hands of a deserving dad-type in your life, including a PuckOpener, a copy of Michael Jordan: The Life and a bottle of L’Occitane’s new Eau de Cade. Want to win it? Here’s how to enter:
