Find of the Month: Abeego

As you guys know by this point, I’m a relatively green-minded person. I regularly use (and share with you guys) green finds – whether it’s natural beauty products, cool recycled items, or in the case of May’s Find of the Month, an awesome product that considers end-to-end use AND solves a major eco-friendly household conundrum. Namely, plastic materials like plastic wrap and baggies make up 12% of the average household’s waste. If you’re like me, you’ve probably thought, “There’s got to be a better way to store this stuff.”

Abeego CheeseEnter Abeego, the brainchild of B.C.-based Toni Desrosiers and Colin Johnston who asked that very same question, only in a more intelligent way. Fed up with the amount of plastic waste they were generating, Toni and Colin wondered what people used to preserve their food before the influx of plastic products. The answer? Beeswax.

Abeego CucumberThus, Abeego was born. Now hang on, because the amount of benefits and sheer genius of this product are endless. I’m going to try and break it into small pieces for you. First up, let’s talk about what Abeego is. It’s available in a range of sizes of sheets (that can be formed into pouches), and can basically be used in way that you’d use your plastic wrap (and then some) to store and preserve everything from vegetables to leftovers to fresh herbs to cheese.

Abeego Melon

Abeego products are made from a flexible, bendable type of cotton that can be shaped to virtually anything you need to wrap up, from the end of a delicious loaf of artisan bread to half an avocado or cantaloupe you’ve sliced open for a recipe. The cotton is infused with pure beeswax, certified organic jojoba oil, and organic tree resin. As an aside, Abeego products smell amazing. I can’t put into words – that honey-sweet scent of beeswax, I just want to bury my face into the stuff, never mind what it’s covering up. But beyond that delicious, pleasant, and ultimately neutral smell (don’t worry, your sprigs of thyme won’t suddenly smell like honey when you stuff them in a turkey), there’s a benefit this to this trifecta of ingredients. They’re naturally anti-fungal, antiseptic, and anti-bacterial.

Abeego SaladSo what’s the benefit of being anti-microbial, antiseptic, and anti-fungal you ask? Namely, it allows your food to breathe. And that my friends, is one of the key differences between Abeego and plastic wrap, the latter of which basically locks everything out to create an artificial barrier between your food and the outside world it comes from. Abeego meanwhile, lets your food breathe. That means it can actually last longer, because it’s not stuck recycling the same old tired air that gets trapped under plastic coverings. Amazing right? And particularly beneficial for foods that tend to expire more quickly, like cheese, fresh herbs, or fruits like avocado.

Abeego CarrotsBut wait, there’s more. Let’s circle back to that initial question. Toni and Colin wanted a more eco-friendly alternative to storing their food. So let’s talk about that. Apart from the fact Abeego isn’t made from plastic, which is a byproduct of the oil industry (and can contain BPA), and apart from the fact it’s got natural ingredients, Abeego is also reusable. When you’re done with stashing something, simply give it a quick rinse with water and earth-friendly soap, let it dry, and you’re good to use it again and again. With proper care, Abeego products can last for a year, and when you’re done with them, simply compost them! That’s what I meant by thinking about a product’s total lifecycle. You won’t just be cutting back on how much plastic you use, you’ll be cutting yourself out of trashing any kind of food wrapping altogether. High five!

Abeego Bread DoughThink I’m done? I’m not! Abeego has many other uses than just slapping on top of a bowl of leftovers. It makes an excellent cover for a bowl when you’re trying to get dough to rise, allowing enough warmth and moisture from the air in to help that pizza or bread dough rise like a champ. You can also use it to transport foods when you’re going on a picnic, or if you’re toting a piece of fruit to work (it’ll help keep it from bruising). Abeego also helps lock scents in – wrap a half-sliced onion in a sheet of Abeego and it won’t stink up your fridge. You can even use it to dry your herbs for future use. Amazing right?

Abeego has a pretty awesome video library where you can learn about all kinds of benefits and ways to use Abeego products to keep your food fresher, for longer, in an eco-friendly way. From aging cheese naturally to keeping those avocados bright green (which I know I’ve mentioned like three times already, but that’s a hella amazing feat!), be sure to peruse their videos to learn about even more ways to use this incredible, revolutionary product.

Abeego CreamLet’s wrap things up with a note on cost. Abeego basically comes in four packs, each priced at $18. The bigger the size, the fewer number of sheets you get – two large sheets, three medium, or six small are the breakdowns – although you can also nab a variety package with one of each size, or a single giant sheet for $15. They’re available online, and since they’re a Canadian brand, shipping is pretty reasonable. But word about Abeego is spreading. They’re also available at a ton of retailers across Canada and the U.S.

Abeego PlatterNow if you, like me, are known for being that insider-y type that introduces new products and finds to your friends, then this is an excellent gift idea. It’s the sort of little thing a loved one will adore being introduced to, and the price point makes it accessible for virtually any occasion. With Mother’s Day on the horizon I can’t help but think this would make a lovely gift for any mom that loves the kitchen or is eco-minded. But the uses beyond that are boundless. How about a hostess gift? A thank you present? A houseguest gift? Birthdays, just because, housewarming – you name it. Abeego is an eco chic gift idea anyone in your life will quickly come to love.

Abeego BreadNow Abeego and I appear to be on the same page when we say this is an excellent pick for Mother’s Day this month. We’re giving away three sets of Abeego Flats to three lucky winners. That’s right, you’ll nab three boxes of Abeego products. The idea? Keep one for yourself, gift one to your mom (or daughter), and gift one to another influential mama in your life – maybe a grandparent, a sibling, a fellow parent, you name it. If you’re as excited as I am about trying this awesome product, then read on to learn how you could enter to win one of three sets of three packages of Abeego Flats. I watched the “fresh chopped vegetables for lunch” video and I must admit, I need Abeego in my life. I pack all the lunches, everyday, for my family and go through too much plastic. I am curious about the onion video….is it true that the Abeego will not smell like onion after you use it? Hopefully more stores will carry this product soon. I would love to buy some.

    • It is true! Your Abeego will not smell like an onion. Abeego works more like the natural skins the onion naturally comes in. It breathes so your onion doesn’t start to stink. Feel free to test it, we love hearing first hand feedback!
      Toni
