Block Party
What It Is: Sid Dickens is an artist – and now, a Canadian company – based in B.C. In the mid-90s, a client happened to be visiting Sid’s studio when he noticed a collection of small plaques, and immediately saw them as individual little works of art, snapping up a whopping 400 for them. Thus, an idea was born. Today, Sid Dickens releases several collections of what they called ‘Memory Blocks’, non-toxic, porcelain-esque plaster tiles featuring charming and often-vintage inspired artwork, surrounding themes like nature and ancient symbols.
Each block measures 6 x 8″ and comes with a slightly pre-distressed feeling, adding to the blocks’ antique vibe. They actually feel rather textural, as opposed to a flat painting. The blocks are small enough that they make great additions to little nooks and corners that won’t accommodate a large-sized piece of art. Alternatively, they can be paired together in whatever style you like – many of the blocks complement each other quite nicely. They actually have a ‘Create a Wall’ option so you can play around and find a layout and arrangement of blocks that works for you.
Who It’s For: Your new niece or nephew, to decorate their nursery. Your sibling, as a memorable housewarming present. Your spouse, to celebrate a special occasion (and another one after that, and another one after that…)
What It Costs: Each Memory Block retails for $92.
Where It’s At: The easiest way to view the full collection and pick your faves is to visit the Sid Dickens website. While you’re there, be sure to check out their new fall and holiday collections!
