Canadiana Cool
We live in a mighty inspiring place, and I *love* when people use Canada as their muse for creating some lovely gift ideas – like today’s shop, BrownEyedSuzy. Created by Calgary-based Susan, this charming online boutique stocks pillows and scarves that feel oh so fall (but are fashionable year-round).
The piece de resistance in BrownEyedSuzy are the decorative cotton twill pillows ($40 each), which come in a huge range of styles, many of which draw on Canadiana inspiration. The colours are typically a basic khaki beige or black, but there are some with bright pops of colour, like this cute trifecta of word-emblazoned pillows. Although Susan has just been in business for a year, she’s already amassed a beautiful collection of styles to match any decor.
BrownEyedSuzy has also caught the attention of West Elm, which recently opened in Calgary (on 16 Ave SW). The shop is known for its ‘West Elm Local‘ program, which scouts out local artisans and sources runs of their products in-store, as a way to mix local flavour and culture into their effortless home decor items. BrownEyedSuzy is one of just a handful of local artists selected to kick the program off, and her cozy Canadian-inspired pillows can be found in store for those of you living in Cowtown. Pro tip: ask for their feather inserts (not on the floor). For just $12 you can stuff your BrownEyedSuzy pillow with soft, cuddly feathers.
Beyond the pillows, BrownEyedSuzy also stock some lovely wrap scarves for the cooler months, hand knit from typically acrylic wool. Not only will they keep you warm, they can be worn multiple ways – as a cowl, shawl, or shrug. Scarves are fabulous gifts as you never have to worry about whether they’ll ‘go’ with someone’s wardrobe, plus they serve a practical purpose in the cooler months.
Personally, I think pillows are a fabulous year-round gift. There’s a reason why major stores like Indigo and West Elm stock new lines of pillows every season – it’s not just in hopes of catching someone shopping for their first home. I would love the pillow cover with the moose on it and I know my husband would love the one with the bear. Pillows are an easy way to change up your decor seasonally!
