Top 10 Holiday Gifts 2015 Under $500
Today marks the last of my price point based 2015 holiday gift guides. If you’ve got a bigger budget, any of these wonderful ideas will do. Obviously if you’ve got $500 (or less) to spend, you’re definitely shopping for someone special on your list – perhaps a spouse, parent or child. Today’s gift ideas then, are all crafted with those core groups in mind.
Woods Eagle Trail Tent – $219 @ Canadian Tire
Outdoor equipment always makes for a great Christmas gift – even if they can’t use it just yet (typically). Take a peek into your loved one’s outdoor kit to see what they’re short on or what needs replacing – is their sleeping bag looking threadbare? Is that beloved tent ridden with holes? If the latter, check out this affordable three-person tent. It’s designed with extra stability and has several water-resistant features too, making this a tough tent that can seriously brave the elements. With multiple access points, easy storage, and blessedly easy setup, it’s a way cool gift for any member of the family that enjoys the great outdoors – from the kids to granddad.
Parrot Zik 2.0 Headphones – $429 @ Parrot, Best Buy Canada, and Amazon.ca
Sigh. Hardcore covet alert. Like most people, I have a nice pair of headphones already, but the innovators keep on innovating and releasing new styles that look as good as they sound. Parrot is an electronics company perhaps best known for their drones, but they’re also creating all sorts of awesome gadgets, like their stunning headphones. Available in six bold and classic colours, these wireless headphones are 17% lighter than their previous incarnation, but they actually have a thicker padded headband and with new ear cushions, your ear has more space. And if you’ve been craving a wireless set of cans, these beauts sync seamlessly with tablets, smartphones and computers – in fact, they’re specifically designed to work with the Apple suite of products. While Parrot has already won over audiophiles with their ‘Parrot Concert Hall’ sound, they also offer several battery-extending modes, which are perfect if you’re going on a long-haul flight or working all night on a new track. A perfect gift for music fans this season!
Cold as Fluff Parka – $298 @ lululemon
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – outerwear is a fabulous gift idea for Canadian women (and men)! If you’re tired of pulling out the same jacket day after day, a fresh winter coat can make those dreary January days feel a little more okay. lululemon carries a handful of cuddly winter coats that feel uber lightweight but will keep you super warm. Waterproof, wind-resistant, and extra insulation around your face, this stylish coat will keep you warm and make you look amazing. It’s also got a hidden cell phone pocket for those essential ‘I’m so bloody cold texts!’ and a lightweight hood to throw on when the wind gets really strong. Want something even more heavy duty? They have a ‘Subzero‘ version with double the amount of goose down.
Kenneth Cole New York Unisex Bluetooth Smart Technology Watch – $199 @ Hudson’s Bay
I actually wrote about a similar gift idea to this yesterday, but for teens (and girls specifically), called Ringly. I lamented to my husband after sharing it with him that I wished there was a male equivalent and lo and behold while writing this gift guide I discovered Kenneth Cole’s dude-friendly version. It’s a watch yes, but it also syncs up with your smartphone so you can stay engaged with work, friends, and family. The watch sends you subtle notifications when you receive messages or calls, so you can skip checking that phone of yours every five seconds. But if you’re actually wanting to stay hooked up to your phone, the watch also helps – you can use it to change the music that’s playing or to take a selfie remotely. The watch also has a handy security feature for forgetful types – when you start walking away from your phone it’ll send out a warning ‘don’t leave me!’ message – meaning no more forgotten phones on coffee tables.
Rodial Bee Venom Collection – $199 @ Murale or BeautyBoutique.ca
Luxe skincare always makes a wonderful gift because it’s something your giftee will rarely treat themselves to. Rodial – ever the innovators when it comes to infusing their products with super unique ingredients – has tapped into the power of bee venom and stem cells with their latest anti-ageing line. How does it work? Bee venom’s magical power is that it apparently controls muscle contractions in the face (think: Botox lite) and helps increase blood circulation, which in turn, improves skin tone and elasticity for brighter, firmer skin. In trials, over 70% of users of the Bee Venom line reported their skin looked firmer – definitely something the cosmetic-conscious lady in your life will appreciate, especially since it means no going under the knife. This cool kit at least gives her the chance to sample a few products from their line; namely, their serum, moisturizer, and eye cream, for a 1-2-3 punch against visible signs of ageing.
LittleBits Gizmos & Gadgets Kit – $264.99 @ Makerspace Canada
This gift idea is a super cool idea for the kids on your list – but it’s really perfectly suited to anyone with a mind for technology. littleBits, for the uninitiated, is a neat company that builds kid-friendly maker sets that are also fun for adults to get their hands dirty (figuratively speaking). With kits to teach curious minds everything from how to turn their home into a smart home to a DIY synthesizer, there’s a kit for every crafty kid on your list. The most versatile of them all has to be the Gizmos & Gadgets kit, which gives you instruction on creating 12 different gadgets from a race car to a wireless doorbell. But all littleBits sets also encourage you to look beyond the box and get inventing – making this a STEM-friendly pick to encourage the next generation of Steve Wozniaks and Mark Zuckerbergs!
bluebellgray Tetbury Meadow Duvet Set – From $220 @ Hudson’s Bay
If you’re stuck on what to gift someone, one option I always turn to is upgrading what they’ve already got. So if you take a tour of a loved one’s home and notice something could be freshened up, take a gander for some upscale options, like bluebellgray’s gorgeous bedding collections. This UK brand takes whimsical, floral watercolour prints that are hand painted by the owner and designer behind the brand, Fiona Douglas, and screens them onto their super soft cotton blankets, sheets and pillowcases – like with this gorgeous floral duvet set. Machine washable, this pretty package includes a cheerful duvet cover and two matching pillowcases. If you love the look of this one, then do yourself a favour and peruse all of bluebellgray’s collection at The Bay. Each set is more gasp-inducing than the next, to the point where it’d be hard to put just one on your wish list. But hey, everyone always needs sheets right?
Ghost Powerkid 16 Bicycle – $175 @ MEC
As always, I love highlighting gift ideas that’ll get kids active and exploring. In this case, I also feel like this is kind of a classic kids’ gift idea that has maybe fallen by the wayside in recent decades. I’m talking about a brand new bike! MEC of course has tons of options for you, but this sleek bike is a great first step toward riding with the adults. It comes with training wheels, but they can be removed once your kid is ready to free wheel on their own. Grown up bike aficionados will appreciate the quality materials behind this bike too – it’s made from a durable aluminium frame and comes with Kenda tires. Easy to ride, easy to coast – this is a great gift idea for virtually any child.
ghd Arctic Gold Professional Styling Gift Set – $270 @ Sephora
I’m sure I’ve written about ghd’s famed haircare products before – but this pretty champagne gold limited edition hair styling tool was too lovely to pass up sharing! Like all ghd tools, it heats up in mere seconds and can be used to get your hair sleek and shiny straight in a snap, but can also be used to curl your locks. Its high heat ensures your hair turns out super shiny and means you generally only have to pass over your tresses one or two times, for less overall heat styling time. This cool collector’s set also has a handy protector so you can ensure the high heat doesn’t damage any household surfaces, and you can stash your straightener in the included carrying case without worrying about melting (it’s also great for travel). If you’re shopping for a ‘serious’ hair maven, then this is a gift idea you won’t want to pass up!
Hercules Instinct S DJ Controller – $179 @ Long & McQuade (Also Best Buy & The Source)
Have a budding Skrillex or David Guetta in your household? DJs have a pretty all-powerful influence over the music industry these days, so whether your loved one wants to be a full-time DJ, get into music production, work with other artists, or simply throw a raging good party, the first thing they’ll need is a good set of turntables. Hercules has one of the best entry-level options on the market, with everything you need to get started, including software to get mixing on your computer. It’s easy to hook up to headphones for when you’re spinning on your own, but can also be used with speakers for crystal clear sound at your next event. Featuring two pressure-detecting jog wheels and three sets of mixer controls, this modern turntable has all the control you’d want, but can still be used old school – that’s right, scratching is still an option!
I have an *amazing* prize package valued at over $940! If you win, you’ll receive:
