Bring Us Some Figgy Pudding: Gift Ideas for Foodies
Today’s gift guide is geared towards those with a taste for well, good tasting things. Whether you’re shopping for an at-home master chef, looking for party-friendly host gifts, or buying for someone who simply enjoys a good meal, all of these gifts will surely get their lips smacking and their tummies rumbling in no time.
Riso Bello Risotto Pronto – $5.49 @ Supermarkets Across Canada
I love a good risotto my friends, but I have to admit that sometimes I’m overwhelmed with trepidation in making it. It’s a relatively time-consuming dish to make and if you don’t get it just right, the results can be awful. That is, until now. Riso Bello is a family-run Italian company with over 160 years of heritage behind it. It’s been available in Canada for 15 years, but now it’s finally available nationwide, just in time for the holidays. With some of the world’s finest risotto rice on the market plus some handy meal kits like these Risotto Pronto packages, you can make perfectly creamy and tender rice dishes in just 12 minutes! I love the idea of gifting these to an aspiring chef as a great side to whatever protein they’re preparing, or bringing a box or two along as a unique hostess gift.
Chocexchange Subscriptions – $60 / month
Calling all chocolate lovers! Chocexchange is your new haven. As I think I’ve mentioned at least once this holiday season, I’ve been reading a lot about flavour and the value of eating good quality chocolate – believe it or not, it can actually improve your tastebuds and make you more apt to wrinkle your nose at artificial flavour-loaded junk food. So, if you’re looking for an excuse to eat chocolate (of the best quality) you’re welcome – and you’ll find some amazing picks at Chocexchange. This online marketplace curates some of the top chocolate brands in the world, with as much reverie as you might find amongst wine or cigar lovers. Words like ‘single origin’ are commonplace, as are international awards, and chocolate so rich, it’s often free from the most basic additives like cocoa butter and vanilla. You can buy the bars single serve, but true chocolate purists will want to indulge in the subscription box service, which sends a collection of 4-5 themed bars to your home monthly, with tasting notes.
Hickory Farms Holiday Petit Fours – $24.99 @ Sears
I have warm memories of my first petit four as a child. If you’ve never had one, they are essentially little cakes coated in a light chocolate layer. This cute collection caught my eye as a unique alternative to say, a drugstore box of chocolate. Kids and adults alike will love nibbling on these sweet treats. And with four yummy flavours to munch on – Almond, Orange, Strawberry, and Chocolate Mocha – you probably won’t be able to resist having a second. You can pick up these little cakes at your nearest Sears or Hickory Farms booth / pop up shop this holiday season.
Oatbox Subscription – From $20 / Month OR 2 Holiday Granola Bags + Jar Gift Set – $25 (Pictured Above)
This has to be one of the more creative subscription gift ideas I’ve seen out there. Oatbox’s mission is to ensure you start your day off right with the most important meal of the day – a healthy, yummy breakfast made with pure, simple, and often organic ingredients. For $20 a month, your box is jam-packed with wholesome goodies, including granola (both special seasonal ‘exploration’ mixes, and gluten-free / vegan mixes) and plant-based breakfast bars loaded with healthy proteins. Just grab and go for a meal that’s as yummy as it is good for you. And feel EXTRA good knowing you’re supporting a good cause – for every box Oatbox ships out, they also donate a meal to Breakfast Club of Canada. Not quite ready to jump into a subscription? You can also pick up special seasonal gift boxes like the one I featured above. Try out Oatbox’s special Holiday Granola alongside some of their beloved products with a special gift set – a perfect host gift the whole family can enjoy!
BONUS OFFER EXCLUSIVELY FOR CGG READERS: Want to get 50% off your first order? Just enter CGG10 at checkout to save $10 on your first month’s subscription. Valid on subscriptions only, until January 15, 2017.
Food Nook Tours – $30 / Person
How do you out-foodie a foodie? Introduce them to a hidden gem of course! Foodie Bria Weaver is your intrepid guide to the Toronto district of Roncesvalles, a hidden food gem that’s home to dozens of delectable restaurants and food shops. During these exclusive tours, you’ll explore some of Bria’s favourite shops and try out multiple food samples, like buttery croissants and exotic shots of ginger elixir. Throughout the tour, you’ll pick up more than just morsels of food. You’ll hear about the captivating and surprisingly culinary history of the neighbourhood. With tours running most Sunday afternoons, as well as private tours and gift cards available, this is the perfect gift for any foodies looking to one-up their own food-loving friends.
DAVIDsTEA Party Packs – $20 each or 2 for $35
Heading to a holiday fete with a tea lover as the host? Gift them with these festively packaged gourmet teas from DAVIDsTEA! Each box features three holiday favourites in 25 g sizes. For Brunch, you can ‘feast’ on Banana Nut Bread, Coffee Cake, and Cardamom French Toast, while regular holiday fetes are spiced up with a trio of holiday classics: Snow Day, Sleigh Ride, and Santa’s Secret. Perfectly priced for a good friend, house party, or thank you gift for your kid’s teacher, these cute little packages are a perfect way to indulge in holiday treats without the calories.
Raine & Humble Reverse Jumper Print Aprons – $29.95 USD each @ French Studio Imports (or in-person at Bacci’s)
Buying gifts for foodies definitely doesn’t have to be limited to food. If you’re nervous at all about gifting a food lover something that might not be up to their impossibly high standards, you can always treat them to something they’ll simply make use of in the kitchen. I love Raine & Humble’s festive holiday collection, which includes tea towels, oven mitts, aprons, and more! The aprons in particular caught my eye because, no word of a lie, I got a new apron this year and it’s actually so handy – I don’t know why aprons aren’t more commonplace these days! The entire thing works as a tea towel so you don’t have to run and dry your hands every two seconds, plus it keeps your clothes splatter-free. And these ones from Raine & Humble are so cute, you won’t mind covering up that sparkly holiday sweater you’re rocking.
Canadiano Coffee Makers – From $65 + Coffee Beans – $9.95
I couldn’t forget about coffee purists if I was writing a blog post about luxury foodie gifts. Canadiano is the Canadian way to make pour-over coffee, considered by many java addicts to be the best possible way to appreciate the full flavour of premium roasts. Carved from a single block of wood, creation is simple – pour a few spoonfuls of coffee and water into the bowl and within a few minutes you’ll have a fresh, flavourful cup to enjoy. Why the single block you ask? Why wood, you follow up? Well, the more you use your Canadiano, it actually absorbs coffee oils from your beans, making each cup more flavourful over time. And the different types of woods actually impart different flavours – similar to how alcohol tastes differently based on the type of wood it’s aged in. As a result, certain woods actually ‘pair’ better with different types of roasts. Canadiano recommends you use single origin beans with their product – so why not pick up a bag of their premium single origin coffee from Peru?
Chili Ginger Hearts – $6+, Grapefruit and Blood Orange – $6+, Wine Stars – $6+, Prosecco Bears (Limited Edition) – $12 @ Squish
One of the things Canadian gummy candy brand Squish prides itself on is transforming this childhood treat into something truly haute cuisine. Their flavour profiles aren’t what you’ll find at a typical candy store – and there are some varieties that are truly geared to an adult palette. All four of the goodies featured above are some examples that would make a quirky, unexpected gift for the foodie in your life. From boozy Wine Stars and Prosecco Bears to dramatic Chili Ginger and Grapefruit and Blood Range combinations, these are sweet treats that even the most refined foodie will love to indulge in. Individual bags for most varieties start at just $6, but you hit on one someone really loves, fill their stocking with 2 kg bags for $45!
