Spice World
As many of you know, I love to cook – and I eat a largely plant-based diet. While I was looking for some cooking inspo this past year, I came across Saha, a Canadian brand that specializes in creating products that make crafting delicious international dishes a snap!
What does that mean, exactly? Saha produces small batch sauces, curry bases and marinades out of Toronto, using authentic ingredients that basically act as a shortcut in creating your favourite global cuisine. No more spending buckets of money on a spice you’ll never know how to use again folks. Even better? The product are gluten-free, preservative and additive-free, saturated and trans fat-free, cholesterol-free, low in calories, and low in fat and sugar (5 are actually sugar-free). Plus they’re suitable for a plant-based diet like mine.
So what are the products you ask? Currently Saha has 9 products across three different culinary families – Thai, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean. I got to try a few of them and as an overarching statement: They were perfect. They’re a nice liquidy consistency which makes adding them to recipes a cinch (unlike say, solid curry paste which can be tricky to break up sometimes), and they added the ideal level of balance between heat and flavour.
More specifically, a quick rundown of what I got to sample – and what I think it’s perfect for:
Caribbean Curry Base – I actually made the first recipe on the Saha recipes page; the Stir-Fried Curry Noodles. It tasted like something you’d eat at a restaurant, with that earthy heat you find in Caribbean food. I’d also recommend it for people who make rotis or even samosas.
Lahmajoun – I was so curious about this Middle Eastern pizza base. I mixed it with some vegan ground round and spread it on pizza dough, and it tasted amazing, sort of like an exotic Hamburger Helper (I also added cheese to one half of the pizza and it was also great). You could for sure create a creative hamburger pizza as a meat eater with this.
Red + Green Curries – Essentially I’d say what I said above; the liquid texture blends perfectly, and the heat level was *just* right for us. I made a slower cooker red curry and a stir fried green curry and they were both delish.
The folks at Saha also sent me their bestselling product, Shish Touk, a chicken marinade, but naturally I didn’t get a chance to sample it directly – but got a thumbs up review from the family member I passed it onto.
The brand is looking at expanding too – keep an eye out for a new trio of products inspired by the likes of India or Latin America (amongst other possibilities). You can pick up Saha products at select specialty / gourmet shops in Ontario and BC, however your best bet is to just nab them online. They sell for $8 a pop and flat rate shipping of $10 is available – plus they even throw in an extra jar when you order 10 or more products!
I love this as a gift idea for a hostess, or even a housewarming for a foodie friend. They also work well for gift baskets, or thank yous.
