Holly Jolly Hostess: Killer Host Gift Ideas for 2017

We’re pretty early to actually be attending holiday parties but you no doubt are starting to get dates thrown at you. With that in mind, here’s my annual roundup of amazing hostess gifts – way more creative than a bottle of wine and way more fun too! This year I’m changing things up a bit and highlighting items that are particularly useful to the host from a party-planning perspective – whether it’s something they can use during or after the festivities.

AspenClean Cleaning Kits – From $18
It’s funny that for as much time as we spend tidying up the house for our guests, we may end up spending double that after they’ve left. At the very least, make cleaning fun – and safe – with AspenClean’s 100% natural, chemical-free cleaning products. Containing organic essential oils, these pure cleaning products deliver when it comes to breaking down grime, polishing up surfaces, and scent. Ideal for homes with pets or kids (or those who simply want to avoid questionable chemicals), AspenClean has some pretty impressive credentials, including an ‘A’ rating from EWG (a primo industry watchdog) in regards to their ingredient transparency, quality and effects, and they’re Eco-Cert certified! Not only can you gift your host with some top notch cleaning products, the brand also offers home cleaning services in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto for any hostess that could simply use a break. Plus right now, AspenClean is running a fundraiser for the BC Children’s hospital by donating 10% of their product sales and $5 of all gift cards sales directly to the BCCHF. Perfect time to shop and support a great cause!

The Vegan Holiday Cookbook by Marie Laforet – $19.95
Admittedly this gift idea will serve the host better for the next party instead of the one you hand it over at, but this is too perfect a host gift to pass up! Whether the host is looking for some plant-based alternatives to their favourite holiday foods for health or preference reasons, they’ll flip out at the stunningly elaborate dishes contained within – and how easy they are to create. Author Marie Laforet tackles timeless holiday eats like pot pies, wellingtons, vol-au-vents, and even sumptuous desserts like pavlova and creme brulee, all created without meat, eggs, or dairy. With an appetizing photo accompanying every last recipe and awesome inspiration for everything from soup and salad to main dishes and desserts, it’s a gorgeous compilation for novice and experienced vegan chefs alike.

Beeswax Food Wraps – From $8 / Single Sheet or $27 for a Three-Pack @ Sweet Green Studios
There will inevitably be leftovers at any festive fete you’re attending this season, and Canadian brand Sweet Green Studios is serving up a clever eco chic gift idea to help out the host. Their beautiful handmade beeswax food wraps are a natural, reusable alternative to plastic wrap, keeping everything from baked goods to produce to cheese fresh thanks to their breathable beeswax makeup. Simply use them wherever you’d normally use plastic wrap – to cover dishes, wrap up chunks of food, you name it. Then simply wash and reuse! Coming in a range of stylish prints and a bunch of sizes to suit any dishes, you can even custom-design your own mini packs of beeswax wraps to keep on hand for any host gifts you need to serve up this season. Best of all, you’re supporting a local indie Canadian business!

L’Occitane Festive Crackers Trio – $34
Forget paper hats and corny jokes – any guest would love to open one of these festive crackers from L’Occitane! Each colourful paper cracker has its own theme; Almond, Cherry Blossom, and Aromacologie, unloading three mini-sized products for your guests to enjoy or swap with one another. The minis are absolutely perfect for traveling or stashing in your purse or gym bag, and with a $43 value, this is a great value gift set for the host (and her guests) to share come Christmas gathering season.

Drinks West Coasters – $35 / Set @ Woodrift.co
Any host will seriously appreciate this little gift idea well past the last guest leaving. I have a lot of love for Woodrift, a relatively new Canuck outfit from B.C. This unique company specializes in pretty home decor pieces made from real Canadian driftwood, which contains all sorts of gorgeous grain patterns you wouldn’t find in fresh cut wood. And since the wood is already felled, they’re an eco-friendly pick as well. Woodrift has a ton of cool coaster designs, with themes like yoga, drinks, hunting, and nature, so you can easily find a set to suit anyone’s taste. You can even custom order a set to feature a branded logo (hello corporate gift idea!) or some other special shape or symbol. Stock up now and dole ’em out this holiday season – these great coasters also work well as stocking stuffers, thank you gifts, or as a present for bro / guy friend when accompanied by a six-pack of his fave brew.

Nude Bee Honey – $9.99 / jar or from $27.99 / box
Sweet honey is a lovely alternative to wine as a hostess gift. The price points are pretty similar, yet it will last the host way, way longer than a bottle they crack open over dinner – yet they can still instantly use it at the festivities by say, drizzling it over Christmas pudding for dessert, or offering it up as part of their charcuterie fixings. Nude Bee Honey is an Ontario-based brand that specializes in natural, raw honey. That means no artificial flavours or shelf stabilizers, and the honey itself is unpasteurized to ensure you get the purest, sweetest-tasting product possible – just as the bees would’ve intended. Not only do they offer up amazing varieties like pumpkin or goldenrod honey, Nude Bee is committed to protecting our fuzzy, buzzy little friends in part by educating the masses. Order online or shop at a local retailer – supporting Nude Bee is a truly sweet gift!

Linen Teatowels – $23 each @ Forest & Waves
The host is busy running to and from the kitchen; serving up snacks, ensuring everything’s in the oven at the right time, and washing dishes in a flash. Why not outfit their kitchen with a new tea towel? These linen-cotton blend towels are actually made from fabric salvaged from mills for an earth-friendly choice. Plus, they’re sewn and screenprinted right in the B.C.-based Forest & Waves studio. You can opt for the nature-inspired designs above, but there are also cool city prints for many of Canada’s major cities, like Winnipeg or Vancouver, that make this an extra special pick that’s part art, part practical.

NEST Fragrances Festive Collections – From $23 @ Saks Fifth Avenue Stores (CF Toronto Eaton Centre & CF Sherway Gardens), Sephora and Sephora.ca and Nordstrom.ca
Home fragrance masters NEST are a go-to gift idea for pretty much any occasion, but if you want your home to feel and smell like Christmas, then you’ll want to check out their festive collections. Consisting of four amazing scents – Birchwood Pine (not pictured), Hearth, Holiday (with a new design for 2017) and Sugar Cookie (the newest addition overall), NEST offers a range of items under each aroma. Votive candles – which will last an amazing 15-20 hours – start at $23, going up to a mega three-wick candle that’ll last for up to 100 hours and costs $90. Looking for something different? Check out NEST’s liquidless diffuser (ideal for homes with tiny tots and pets) or their reed diffusers. As a heads up, different products are available at different retail locations in Canada, so scope out what you want for the lovely host first and shop second.

Maille Cornichons – $6.49 @ Specialty Food Stores and Supermarkets Across Canada
Every host will tell you not to bring anything, and believe it or not, they don’t want to be inundated with a dozen bottles of wine at the end of the night. The solution? Bring something they can pop open and serve in a flash to tide over hungry guests between dishes. My top pick would be Maille’s Cornichons; mini gherkin-style pickles in a range of flavours, including L’Original (sweet and tangy), Caramelized Onion, Cayenne Pepper, and Mild and Sweet. Perfectly priced and a hit at holiday parties, these little pickles make an excellent compliment to any charcuterie board or appy table that’s being served up.

Gift Soakboxes – $29 each @ Soak Wash Inc.
Laundry isn’t always associated with hostessing, but trust me, there’s a lot of it to be done. From ensuring your party outfit is spic and span to getting all your table linens in order to the inevitable slew of aprons or tea towels that get mussed up while cooking a big holiday meal, laundry is a clutch part of getting the house ready (and tidying it up post-event). Before you reach for that regular grocery shelf brand, might I suggest looking into Soak? This Toronto-based company makes all of their laundry products in Canada, and only uses ingredients that are safe for your skin, making it an ideal choice for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Their Soakbox Trios are a great way to intro someone to the brand and perfectly priced as a host gift; coming in five scents like Fig and Pineapple Grove (plus a scentless option), each set includes a mini-bottle of the brand’s signature Soak laundry detergent, Handmaid hand cream, and starch-free smoothing spray, Flatter.

I hope you have lots of events lined up on your holiday calendar already, because if so, have I got the prize package for you! Or perhaps you’re simply just hosting and ready to be the most prepared host ever – whatever the case may be, one lucky reader o’ mine is going to win the ultimate host gift prize package valued at $350, including:
