All-Canadian Christmas: Canadian Gift Ideas from Coast to Coast

As you may have noticed, the Canadian Gift Guide – while always focused on gift ideas that are readily accessible to Canadians – has really been focusing more and more on local Canadian brands, particularly those that keep their manufacturing right here at home. Today’s gift guide is a tribute to those All-Canadian All Stars, whether they’re made here, designed here, or designed to celebrate all things Canada!

Really Great Goods Room Sprays, Epsom Salts, Mists & More – From $8
The holiday season can be all kinds of stressful, but luckily there are brands like Really Great Goods that are here to give you a little bit of R&R and peace of mind – with just a spritz (or lather)! This all-natural brand includes room sprays, yoga mat sprays, aromatherapy mists, Epsom salts and deodorant to add a little of natural luxury into your life. Their mists are particularly cool as they’re infused with actual quartz / amethyst pebbles designed to give you an instant pick-me-up (or bring-me-down, in the case of their Lavender & Amethyst Mist), clearing away negative energy and rejuvenating your soul. The price points are all super reasonable too, with nothing over $40, meaning you can bundle a few goodies together for a sweet gift basket, or buy items a la carte to hand out for host gifts, Secret Santa exchanges, and more.

City Kraft Cards – $5.25 each @ Forest & Waves
Screenprint by hand on sustainable FSC-certified Kraft paper, these pretty cards celebrate Canada’s major (and even not so major) cities, with major landmarks and skylines depicted alongside each region’s natural wonders. The entire collection actually has 15 different cities depicted, including some American ones, but there are a dozen ones specifically dedicated to Canada. These work on two fronts; buy a set for a friend that’s about to move or go on an adventure to remind them of home, or use them as a creative alternative to an off-the-shelf greeting card when sending well wishes or gift cards by mail.

Camera Straps – $50 each @ Exit
Shopping for a shutterbug this season? Edmonton-based Exit has really cool and comfortable camera straps available that’d make swell gifts this season (especially if your lucky giftee is unwrapping a new camera!) Sturdy yet stylish, these durable webbing and leather straps attach easily to any standard camera, and have reinforced joints and a rivet for extra staying power, ensuring your #1 piece of equipment is held up safe and sound – while standing out from the crowd with the cool print you choose! Available in five patterns as of writing this, but be sure to keep an eye out for more.

Rosso Home Coffee Plan – From $18 / Delivery
The best way to become a coffee connoisseur? Try lots of coffee! Rosso is a Calgary-based local chain of gourmet coffee shops that prides itself on the quality and flavour profile of its beans. So much so, in fact, that you can actually order their coffee across Canada for some straight up yummy brews made in your own kitchen. Not sure where to start? Try their home coffee delivery service. You set the amount of coffee you get and the frequency, and Rosso delivers the freshest, in-season favourites or a new menu offering for you to sample, with beans from around the globe including Rwanda, Colombia, Costa Rica and more. Once you find a bean you love, you can buy the bags a la carte too – they make excellent stocking stuffers and host gifts!

Drake General Store Onesies – $59.95 each; Hillside Throws – $48 each; Mountie Toque – $29.95; Felt Garlands – $18 each
If you want to gift something with Canadiana flair, there is literally nowhere better to shop than Drake General Store. This Toronto-based boutique curates and creates Canuck-themed gear with kitschy themes like Mounties, wildlife, the CBC, and many more (including plenty of non-specifically Canadian gear). Some of my favourite picks this season are some of their cuddliest choices, like their onesies for the whole family, their parent / kid matching toque sets with quirky Mountie motifs, and snuggly blankets to sit by the fireside. Don’t forget about decorating – Drake General Store has awesome ornaments, garlands, and more!

Spa Stones – $16 each @ Salt & Stone
Everything about Salt & Stone’s unique sea salt spa stone soaps is pretty. Let me start there. They come in a unique triangular shape that makes them easy to hold in the shower, plus they’re designed to last way longer than most natural soaps. The packaging is equally pretty then and seriously stands out come Christmas morning, with a unique triangular shape housing your little pyramid of soap. Available in four varieties, each richly scented spa stone salt bar is rich in minerals, with natural moisturizing butters and oils to help soften and rejuvenate the skin. All the soaps are indeed unisex, but you can easily skew more manly with Granite or Black Lava, or go more femme with Rose Quartz and Himalayan Marble, which each have a lovely soft pink tone.

Juddlies Baby Clothing – From $5
Canadian baby brand Juddlies checks every box on a new parent’s list: It’s affordable, it’s soft, and it’s designed for actual, practical, every day parenting. What I mean by that is all too often we are lured in by the adorable cuteness of clothing that looks like miniature adult wear, when in fact, most parents will tell you their tots lived in nothing but onesies and sleep gear for most of their earliest days on this planet. Juddlies delivers cozy, breathable items in all of those categories and then some, with sizes up to 24 months across their bodysuits, playsuits, sleepers, sleep sacks, PJs, and dream sacks – plus a bevy of accessories and household essentials. I highly recommend a spin through their collection (they have great retail distribution also if you want to browse in person) if you’re shopping for any new arrivals or expecting parents this holiday season!

The Canadaland Guide to Canada by Jesse Brown – $32
If you like your Canadian culture with a little bit of a smirk (or okay, a whole lotta snark), then this humorous tome from the creator Canada’s #1 podcast, Canadaland, will suit. In this largely satirical book, Jesse and his cohorts take all those Canadian stereotypes you’re already familiar with, and run ’em through a meat grinder. In fact, this book is probably best suited for people who only have a passing knowledge of Canada – the folks down south that think we ride bareback on work via a moose and would fit right in with the extras on Fargo. While sometimes the mirror Brown holds up to our society is a little harsh (and a little overly dramatically played for ‘laughs’), it’ll ultimately make you – and your friends that are new to Canadian culture – at the very least smirk right back.

Collage Crafting Explora Collection – From $18
The coolest part of this post has been seeing all the creativity coming out of Canada – with an eye on the global market. Collage Crafting is a unique online boutique that creates collections of highly giftable items, each part of its own mini collection. Their latest is the Explora Collection, which is inspired by the world map, and represents different continents on each piece – including coasters, rings, earrings, candle holders, and skull planters in a rainbow of colours. As you might expect from a brand with ‘collage’ in their title, the materials used to create these items are super varied; wood, acrylic paint, resin, and gold leaf go into the earrings, which themselves, come in a few different shapes and colours, making it easy for you to customize a super sweet gift for anyone in your posse.

Fraktals Belgian Chocolate Buttercrunch – From $5
There are plenty of Canadian delicacies to munch on this season, but Fraktals is a beloved classic for anyone that’s ever had the pleasure of tasting this sugary, crunchy, creamy treat. Made in Ontario, these little squares feature Canadian maple syrup in the buttercrunch core, sandwiched between two layers of Belgian chocolate (milk or 70% dark chocolate are available), finished with a sprinkle of raw cashews. You can buy Fraktals in a range of sizes too, making them perfect for everything from stocking stuffers to corporate gifts to host presents. Fraktals can be purchase online, but I’d always suggest checking out their retailer locator – checking in my city alone I have a half-dozen places to pick up these sinfully sweet treats this season!

Reclaimed Print Co. Wooden Coasters – From $4.50 each
Give your interior design a little rustic (and eco-friendly!) design with Reclaimed Print’s wooden artwork. Whether hanging on your walls or decorating your coffee tables with their coasters, this Vancouver-based brand wows with its extensive lineup of designs, wood stains, and yes, sustainably harvested wood that they print everything on. There are quite a few cool things to point out with this brand, but I only have so much virtual space, so let me highlight the following! Not only can you get their prints in a range of sizes if you’re hanging them on your walls, you can choose your stain. With literally hundreds of designs to choose from you won’t be short on choice for your print, but you can also get custom ones. Finally, be sure to check out some of the more innovative applications of their wood printing technique – like wooden postcards!

Local Laundry Clothing – From $30 (for babies) and $35 (for adults)
Another Canadian brand (based in Calgary) where I have almost too many good things to say. Local Laundry focuses on wardrobe staples with minimalist designs to show your hometown or national pride. From cozy sweatshirts to classic tees to baby onesies, you can pick up their designs in a range of basic colours (black, white, grey, and the occasional cranberry) and unisex styles to outfit everyone in your crew. What’s extra cool is each month, Local Laundry donates 10% of its net profits to a local charity. When you make a purchase, you tell them which charity you want to sponsor. They compile all suggestions, randomly choose one, and that person gets a nice little donation that *you* helped make happen. It’s a super cool way to support local business and give back to the community in one fell swoop! Now if only they’d have more designs for all of Canada’s major cities!

Now, you all know how generous Canadians can be. So much so, in fact, that the lovely folks I wrote about in this post got together and are offering up a prize package valued at nearly $900. Mind-blowing right? If you win this all-Canadian extravaganza, you’ll receive:

  • Really Great Goods Gift Basket
  • Set of 12 City Kraft Cards by Forest & Waves
  • Exit Camera Strap
  • 3-Month Rosso Home Coffee Subscription
  • Drake General Store Sick Kids Onesie, Hillside Throw, Mountie Toque & Felt Garland
