In The Zone

I like to call today’s featured retailer a bit of a serendipitous match – awhile ago I spotted a unique gift idea via Kickstarter, but one that was woefully under-available in Canada. When I was contacted by the owner of Quebec-based Opuszone, Marlus, it seemed like fate – not only did they carry the gift in question, they had dozens of other awesome ideas that I am psyched to be sharing with you. Of course, I did have to winnow down my wish list a bit. So without further ado, here are five of my favourite gift choices from one of Canada’s newest and choicest new gift retailers – Opuszone.

Pyro PetPyroPet Kisa – $39.95
This is the aforementioned super cool gift idea, that earned tons of buzz when launching on Kickstarter. What appears to be an innocent cat candle (available in grey and pink) burns down to reveal a fierce, gothic skeleton inside. Designed all the way over in Iceland, this is a very funky pick for your quirky best friend with a dark side.

Solar Tree ChargerSolar Tree Charger – $189
The products carried at Opuszone come from all over the world, and like the PyroPet above, have often earned accolades from the public or design experts. This is definitely true with the Netherlands-imported item above, which is the winner of the Good Design Award. Simply let the cute tree branch solar panels soak up the sun, and presto, your favourite devices will be charged up in no time. This charger earns double points in my book for looking fabulous no matter if you’re using it or not, and for its green-minded design.

Singing Bird Plant Moisture MeasureSinging Bird Plant Moisture Meter – $15.95
This super sweet gift is an awesome stocking stuffer for any green-thumbed person on your list. Available in three different designs, simply place the birdie in your favourite plant (or even in your garden) and it’ll keep tabs on how dry your soil is. When it’s time to give your plants a water, the bird will sing out – the exception being nighttime, when a special sensor tells it to stay quiet in the dark. Also a nice accompaniment to a houseplant as a neat housewarming or hostess present.

Wine Carrier With GlassesWine Carrier With Glasses – $79.95
For the mobile vino drinker comes this slimline protected case that has just enough space for two glasses and a bottle of your favourite beverage. The uses for this set are pretty versatile – from a picnic in the park to a camping trip to bringing your own drink to enjoy while catching an outdoor concert – you’ll truly get to have your wine and drink it too. Makes a lovely anniversary or wedding gift, particularly with a bottle tucked inside.

Steam Ship Steaming LidSteam Ship Steaming Lid – $15.95
I want this gift too much to not feature it on this list. Made from flexible silicon, this pot lid adapts to virtually anything you’ve got in your kitchen cupboards. Its unique and critical feature? The little blow holes in the steamship ‘handle’ that allow for steam to escape so your dish doesn’t boil over. Way more elegant than tipping your pot, plus it avoids any built-up drips from sizzling on your stovetop as they plunge from the lid above. An awesome idea for a hostess gift or a stocking stuffer, methinks.

Some more bits and bobs about Opuszone. For one, this is a mere smattering of the products listed. I could probably exclusively source gift ideas from this awesome gift shop for the next three months straight and you wouldn’t get bored. For another, shipping is free with orders over $99 nationwide. Finally, as you can see by this post, the price points vary, making them a versatile source for whatever occasions you’re shopping for. I don’t think I spotted anything over $200, and many items actually fall under the oh-so-important $50 or less category.

And with that, I’m pleased as punch to be giving away four $25 gift certificates so you can shop to your heart’s content on the site. Want to win one? Here’s how to enter:

I love the steam ship lid – I have a habit of having pots boil over and this will help the steam escape.

My favourite product is something I’ve seen before, their USB Light + Astronaut http://www.opuszone.com/collections/all-products-tous-les-produits/products/magnet-key-holder-porte-cles-magnetique. The reason why I love it is ‘cos it’s so whimsical & I’m always needing a light as the day turns into night, so why not have one like this around. I must be in the company of others ‘cos it’s sold out!
