Struck Silver
You know that piece of jewelry your best friend, or your mom, or even that girl on TV has that just makes your jaw drop and your stomach flip flop a bit? And then you go home and look at your own collection and lament – why don’t *I* have something that striking / eye-catching / awe-inspiring? That’s sort of how I feel about the pieces from New York jewelry designer Alex Story. They’re such a stunning mix of tough motifs and delicate cutwork it’s hard not to covet just about everything she creates – and I just had to bring light to her great stuff to all of you kids.
On the ‘tough’ side of things, a lot of her pieces incorporate elements of protection – like the tough-as-nails brass knuckles necklace ($350) pictured above. If your most favourite lady loves a little bite with her beauty, consider picking up something like the sharp-looking claw ring ($150) or the Far East-inspired throwing stars necklace ($350).
That’s not to say there’s not a softer side to Alex’s creations. Consider the fine details of these stunning pieces, to name a few, and you’ll quickly catch on to what I mean. Made from pure sterling silver there is a certain timelessness and elegance to the jewelery that makes it easy to envision being a part of just about any woman’s wardrobe – for her and many years to come. And really, the prices are completely reasonable for solid investment pieces that will stand the test of time AND stand out in a crowd. After all, you can’t buy Alex’s jewelry at any store in Canada (although she does ship to plenty of fashion-minded Canadians through her website).
Also, and this should come as news to approximately no one, I’ve got a sincere appreciation for the independent designers out there that really pour their heart and soul into their work, particularly if they’re bringing back a lost art or crafting things in a new or different way. And indeed, Miss Alex makes all of her pieces in wax first, then uses the ancient practice of lost wax – or mould-casting – to create each item. And hey, if you’re digging the vibe of your work but you want a piece all your own, she even does custom orders. Get your girlfriend a special ring to commemorate your anniversary, or congratulate a loved one for graduating or overcoming an illness with a memorable piece.
Now, when I approached Alex Story about her lovely gems, she graciously offered to share the wealth with one lucky reader. Here’s what.
