All Over Aroma

This post is special for me. When I was a kid – and I mean, just started reading fashion magazines – I heard about this new brand called Demeter Fragrance Library (or as it’s more commonly known, Demeter). Their bag? Singular-experience fragrances that bring to life inspired by everyday scents you encounter and secretly (or not-so-secretly) love. Think about it. When someone asks you what your favourite smells are, it’s rare that you’ll answer something like “Hyacinth, rosewater, white musk, cucumber, and tangerine” – but that’s what goes into a typical multi-layered fragrance.

Ever since reading about Demeter back then, I’ve always revered the line, and gotten seriously excited when it crossed my path in stores. After all, where else can you find a quite literal library of over 250 scents ranging from the everyday – Sugar Cookie or Apple Pie anyone?-  to the extraordinary – like Riding Crop or Earthworm. Before you get all anxious about wandering the streets smelling like a Paperback or Fresh Hay (yes both are real), rest assured, these are purposefully called ‘Pick-Me-Ups’ because their fragrance isn’t nearly as overpowering as a typical eau de parfume or toilette. They work well when tucked into a desk or at the front door, when you want a quick, comforting spritz of your favourite scent.

I thought it’d be fun to check in with Demeter – whose line literally expands by the month – every few months or so to select some seasonally appropriate scents you may want to consider as gifts. All of their sprays are unisex, and come in either the glass bottles pictured above, or in convenient roll-on sticks that you can toss into your purse (hint: they make great stocking stuffers). I also love these as bridal party gifts (for bridesmaids & groomsmen) because you can really focus in on a friend’s favourite fragrance and make this a truly customizable, fresh present idea. And if you’re wondering where to buy, Demeter can be found all over the place in Canada at your favourite beauty / mass retailers, but you can also purchase every bit of their collection online for reasonable Canadian shipping ($12.99 flat rate).

My Summer 2012 Picks!

Humidor
What It Smells Like: A 1920s gentleman’s club – rich tobacco, chilled air, and intellectual prowess.
Why I Picked It: Whether your dad is a fusty old man or a dapper young fellow, he’ll love the old-school vibe this scent gives off.

Popcorn
What It Smells Like: Your own personal cinema lobby – freshly popped, slathered-in-butter popcorn, minus all the noisy kids and sticky floors of a real theatre.
Why I Picked It: It’s tent pole movie season which means plenty of movie visits, but if you want every night to be a blockbuster, just spritz on this poppy cologne.

Clean Skin
What It Smells Like: Freshly scrubbed skin, in those precious moments after you step out of the shower before your favourite bath product scents evaporate (evoked here by various citrus fruits, florals, and vanilla).
Why I Picked It: It’s the newest addition to the Demeter family for one, and it’s a perfect, breezy summer scent for another – especially if you’re trying to work the au naturel vibe this season.

Barbados Cherry
What It Smells Like: Tart, juicy, and sweet, this tropics-inspired fragrance manages to channel a bag of Cherry Blasters and a grove of cherry trees in equal measure.
Why I Picked It: As a Canadian, I always associate cherries with the summertime – whether you’re thinking of juicy BC berries sold by the side of the road or the ubiquitous cherry on top of your summery sundae, this scent is a sweet nod to one ofthe foods of summer.

Maple Syrup
What It Smells Like: Crackling maple sugar as it’s heated and then poured into delicious syrupy treats. That woodsy, earthy sugar scent you can’t find anywhere else.
Why I Picked It: Because Canada Day is just around the corner, and you can’t get much more in the spirit of the occasion than by donning our national scent!

That was fun right? I also thought it’d be fun to give away three scents of your choice to suit the season – whether you’re thinking manly man aromas like Gin & Tonic or Fireplace, beach-friendly picks like Pina Colada or Hawaiian Vanilla, or whatever three catch your eye (or nose). Here’s how to enter:

1) Visit the Demeter website and tell me in the comments below which threes scents you’d most like to try by June 26th.

2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around June 27th to select the winner, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.

3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible to participate in this promotion.

4) Bonus Entry: Follow the good people at Demeter Twitter (@DemeterCEO) and drop your handle in the comments below so I can give you extra credit. Be sure to retweet any tweets they post on this contest!

These are the next three I’d LOVE to check out: Humidor (because my husband should wear Demeter too!), Waffle (because that sounds so delicious), and Graham Cracker (because foodies scents are a great no-calorie decadence.)
