Flash Post: Skin Deep
What It Is: I read this book last week and was pretty blown away. The CBC’s Gillian Deacon has deconstructed a ton of myths – like the fact someone is actually regulating the potions and lotions and cosmetics we slather on every day – to reveal a pretty ugly truth: we are exposed to some pretty frightening toxins on a daily basis. The book highlights what nasty ingredients to stay far, far away from, and provides DIY and natural alternatives to everything from your shampoo to your eyeliner to your sunscreen. Personally, it’s really inspired me to look into swapping out a bunch of my cosmetics and body care products for safer options, and I’m hoping to bring some new, less toxic brands to you through my blog (as I’ve already done with amazing companies like Pelle Beauty and Consonant). I don’t like getting too preachy or standing on a soap box just because I’ve got a blog and a great, captive audience, but if one of my goals is to come up with the best in gift-giving ideas, that’s gotta take into account the healthiest as well. So start with this book, and join me on the ride – expect to see a bunch of great natural beauty alternatives mixed in with the content you’re already used to here on the CGG.
Who It’s For: Your early adopter mom (um, like mine), that has been toting reusable shopping bags and rocking natural toothpaste for decades. Your cosmetics-obsessed sister, because it’s worth knowing what exactly that $30 mascara is doing to your bloodstream. Your freshly minted new mama friend, because the world suddenly becomes a lot scarier when you’ve got a little one under your wing.
What It Costs: $26 list / $16 online.
Where It’s At: Your favourite local bookseller (and plenty of indie beauty stores) or you can pick it up at Amazon.ca
I’ve also got a copy of the book to give away to one of you folks that’s about to be fully on the green beauty train! Here’s how to enter:
