When In Aroma…

My mom, I swear to you, is way ahead of a bunch of trends. She’s been toting reusable bags to the grocery store and buying organic since the 80s, and she’s gently nudged me in the direction of homeopathic alternatives to everything from sleeplessness to speeding up bruise healing to clearing up a stuffy nose. She also introduced me to aromatherapy at a pretty young age, and I gotta tell you, I believe in the stuff. They say scent is the most powerful memory trigger in our repertoire of senses. Those olfactory glands are quite keen to respond to whatever you lay on ’em, like lavender to put your mind at ease, or bergamot to spruce it up during sluggish afternoons. That’s just one of the things that appeals to me about UK brand Aromatherapy Associates, which infuses essential oils into their line-up of performance face and body care products. The brand actually draws a history all the way back to the very beginnings of modern aromatherapy, when brand cofounders Geraldine Howard and Sue Beechey trained under some of the industry’s earliest practitioners, way back in the 1970s. Today I’m psyched to point out a few notable picks amongst their vast line, all of which deserve some serious consideration for your upcoming Mother’s Day gift-giving!

Aromatherapy Associates Soothing CollectionLet’s kick things off by taking a look at the brand’s new Soothing collection (the starter kit is pictured above). If, like me, you’ve got red, irritated skin, this is a great place to start in nourishing it back to good health. The ‘science’ side of the product line uses something called ‘prebiotics’ which both encourage the growth of healthy bacteria, and sweep away hostile bacteria that cause itching & redness. On the essential oil side of things, each of the products includes gentle oils like chamomile, licorice, evening primrose, and arnica that actually serve as the active ingredients that’ll buff yet protect your sensitive skin.

Aromatherapy Associates Inner StrengthIf a woman (or mom) in your life has gone through a cancer diagnosis, she’ll appreciate the sentiment behind this limited-edition new product from Aromatherapy Associates. This luxe bath and shower oil was created by the brand’s co-founder & President, Geraldine Howard, to provide her with an therapeutic boost while dealing with the trials and stress of her own cancer treatment. With uplifting essential oils including clary sage, frankincense, and cardamom, it’s a welcome pick-me-up for any woman – especially when you consider 10% of proceeds will go to Foundation ATK, a Holland-based organization that’s pioneering a new cancer vaccine (that Geraldine Howard herself is a patient for).

Aromatherapy Associates RefineryGuys can get into the act as well, if you’re looking ahead to Father’s Day or a special birthday or anniversary – aromatherapy and the power of essential oils works just as well on a man, even if he’s a little hesitant to admit how much he digs the scent of patchouli and rosehip seed-infused shave oil. Aromatherapy Associates has a number of gender-neutral products including shower gels and creams, but the Refinery line is clearly designed with men in mind: help him heal years of razor roughness with their line-up of shaving products, lotions, and gels.

Aromatherapy Associates Comfort Candle

If you’re looking for a pretty housewarming, hostess, or houseguest gift, you really can’t go wrong with a candle – and what better choice than a Comfort Candle laden with uplifting rose and ginger notes. This long-burning candle is made from natural plant wax, meaning it’ll also burn clean – no risk of accidentally blackening your walls, furniture, or upholstery.

Aromatherapy Associates Mini Bath and Shower Oil CollectionFinally, if you’re just looking to sample everything Aromatherapy Associates has to offer, I’d point you in the direction of the very gift-worthy Miniature Bath & Shower Oil collection. The set features travel-friendly bottles to give you the chance to get fully immersed in the formula of your choice based on what your body (and mind) needs. Each bottle has enough for one luscious bath or shower experience, but I love the idea of taking a drop from one and a dollop for another for a totally customized, completely soothing experience.

If you’ve clicked on any of the links in this post, you’ll already know that Aromatherapy Associates has a UK site – however the products are readily available in Canada. Use the stockists page to track down a spa or boutique near you. Alternatively I’ll point you in the direction of BeautySpaSales.ca, which offers free Canadian shipping + a whole host of Aromatherapy Associates products.

Finally, I’m actually giving away a Miniature Bath & Shower Oil collection to one of y’all, so you can start unwinding after your daily dose of the Canadian Gift Guide, or whatever gets you jacked up during the day. Here’s how to enter:
