Book Report: Wedding Night

Wedding Night Sophie Kinsella

What’s the Buzz?: Sophie Kinsella is the fairy godmother of 21st Century chick lit. Her effervescent, madcap writing has attracted millions of readers around the world to her Shopaholic series, plus her other best-selling standalone titles. You can expect a new Kinsella tome to hit the shelves about once a year, and this year’s entry seems inspired by all the hubbub around last year’s bestselling erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey.

What’s the Story?: Everyone has a set of fairy tale ideals in their head when they find their soul mate and walk down the aisle – or even in the months or years leading up to it. But what happens when the fairy tale falls apart? That’s the heart of this tale of two sisters that have had their hearts broken. Fliss, the elder of the two, is a high-profile travel magazine editor going through an incredibly messy divorce. Her younger sister, Lottie, is feeling jilted thanks to one of Kinsella’s trademark ‘misunderstandings’ and stumbles into an incredibly passionate but impulsive relationship with an old flame. Determined to protect her sister from the anguish she’s currently going through, Fliss pulls out all the (comical) stops to derail her sister’s love life – but where does the line between protective and controlling come to pass?

I love Sophia Kinsella’s books. Will I like this one?: Yes. I hesitate to call Kinsella formulaic because she does explore different styles and devices in most of her books. For example, she’s written a ghost story in the past – a bit of a sidestep from what you’d expect in the realm of chick lit.  But the trademarks of her stories are definitely here: the rom com plot, the endless hijinks and mix-ups, the unapologetically British prose. There is a fresh spin in this story though – it’s the first novel of Kinsella’s that features two narrators, and to her credit, some of the ‘will they or won’t they’ threads are more tautly wound this time around.

Well…I’ve never read a Sophie Kinsella book. What’s she like?: Very, very readable. You can breeze through one of these beachy reads in a long weekend if you’re not that attentive. If you’ve ever read and liked a book by Jane Green, Helen Fielding, or (the slightly more serious) Emily Giffin, you’ll enjoy Kinsella’s books.

What else should I know?: Well when I first heard about this book, I suspected it was an opportunity for Kinsella to retread the wedding world she explored several years ago in the third entry in her Shopaholic series. However, the wedding really isn’t the focus here – if you’re looking at the title, it’s definitely about the ‘Wedding Night’ (well, sort of) and a trip to the Greek islands. That being said, I still think this would make a cheeky gift to tie into a wedding gift – whether you dole out copies to your bridesmaids as a pre-wedding book club to keep your jitters at bay on the big day OR perhaps you include it in the bride’s honeymoon kit to read while waiting in the airport lounge to give her some hilarious perspective.
