The Maine Event

I’ve written a lot about natural care brands over the last few months, as part of an ongoing commitment to showcase good-for-you beauty and body lines alongside more commercial brands. Today’s featured company however, is a happy mix of the two. If you’ve perused the aisles at the likes of Shopper’s Drug Mart or even a big box grocery store, you may have spotted a Tom’s of Maine product here or there. Their products earn tons of gold stars for being good in just about every way possible – from eco-friendly packaging and sustainable processes to no animal testing, no artificial ingredients, and full disclosure on what each and every piece of their products contains, plus a commitment to giving back with time & financial contributions…I mean, you can’t get much better. Anyway all of this to say, Tom’s of Maine? You’ve earned a thumbs up from me. And for today’s post, I’m highlighting a few Father’s Day-friendly picks from the brand that would work great together when packed into a dopp kit for those weekend getaways and summer holidays.

*Note: All prices are based on online retailers where I tracked these products down and may not reflect in-store prices.

Toms of Maine ToothpasteNatural Toothpaste – $7.50 @ SpaBoutiqueA funny thing about your regular toothpaste – it’s actually sorta kinda loaded with sweeteners. If you want a pure, refreshing, and equally effective way to keep those teeth shining, natural toothpaste is the way to go. As fair warning, you’ll be pretty shocked with the first brush at how different it ‘tastes’ from what you’re used to – tell dad to mix it with a little bit of his regular toothpaste at first until he gets used to the au natural flavour. For the record, while I’ve highlighted the Whole Care multi-action product above, Tom’s makes tons of toothpastes for various needs – including sensitive teeth and gums, whitening, and even kid-friendly flavours.

Tom's of Maine Beauty BarsBeauty Bars – $4.29 each @ Well.caOkay, so I recognize these are called ‘beauty bars’ and thus might turn off a less-secure male…but if you get your guy to try out some of Tom’s of Maine’s other products, I guarantee he won’t be able to resist expanding his body care horizons with one of these super natural and soothing bars of soap. Available in two subtle scents plus an unscented formulation for sensitive skin, you can either take this into the shower with you or go old school and replace those alcohol-ridden pump soaps you wash your hands with. Bar soap is way more eco-friendly, especially when it’s natural. I like the idea of giving dad a little manly man spa package – why not tuck a bar of soap and a new razor into a plush robe? Or, consider the Beauty Bars as great stocking stuffers come Christmas.

Tom's of Maine DeodorantMen’s Long Lasting Deodorant Stick – $10.50 @ SpaBoutiqueIt’s a well-known fact that the aluminum found in your average deodorant is very likely hazardous to your health in the long run. Although natural deodorant has gotten a bad rap in the past for under-performing in ‘heated’ situations, Tom’s of Maine promises 24 hours of wetness and odor protections – sans cancer-causing aluminum. After a half-dozen successful varieties for women, the brand recently expanded their lineup with a fresh ‘Mountain Spring’ formulation for men. If you’re buying dad a gym membership or upgrading his sports bag, toss a stick of natural deodorant as gentle encouragement to swap out for natural products.

Tom's of Maine Cleansing MouthwashCleansing Mouthwash – $10.29 @ Well.caI don’t know if guys are more prone to halitosis or what, but mouthwash definitely seems to be a guy’s domain. But here’s the deal with most mouthwash brands – they’ve got alcohol (which can actually dry out your mouth, causing more bacteria to populate) and they’re often not suitable for folks that are gluten-free (seriously). While these might seem like small crosses to bear for something you swish around in your mouth for 60 seconds, consider that repeated use and folks with a serious gluten issue may be scrambling for something a little safer and smarter. Enter Tom’s of Maine’s super powerful mouthwash: free from alcohol and packed with mouth-neutering baking soda for a tingly freshness that lasts.

As you can see from the above, Tom’s of Maine is available at both Well.ca and SpaBoutique.ca, however like I also said, you can find it at most major grocery and drugstores, particularly those with a well-stocked natural care section. Finally if you’re eager to get your paws on some Tom’s of Maine goodies, I’ve got a gift basket valued at over $100 to give away! Here’s how to enter:

1) Leave a comment by June 20th with the Tom’s of Maine product you’re most eager to try.

2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around June 21st to select the winners, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.

We are already using Tom’s of Maine toothpaste for sensitive teeth. It seems to be more effective than all the other sensitive toothpastes out there. So we’re definitely sold on the product. What I wasn’t aware of was that they also make products other than toothpaste. Who knew. I’d love to try their soap as we all have very sensitive skin in my house.
