Find of the Month: Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut

So here’s a fun fact about the Canadian Gift Guide: February is one of my favourite months for writing ‘Find of the Month’. The reason? Because I generally team up with a brand that embodies the Valentine’s Day spirit – sweet, lovely and also an obvious contender for a Valentine’s gift this year. Case in point? Gourmand Canadian brand, Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, owned by Cococo Chocolatiers (based in Calgary).

Sold nationwide (as well as Japan and the U.S.) through chocolate boutiques (and online), the brand has developed a reputation amongst foodies, chefs and chocolate fiends alike as the chocolate worth sacrificing your daily calories for – with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and unique, tantalizing flavours like Mango Peppercorn (Dark Chocolate, Mango, Pink Peppercorn), Butter Truffle (Hazelnut Paste, Milk Chocolate Buttercream), and La Flamme (Orange, Soft Caramel), the majority of which you can order individually when popping into a shop.

Cococo Ballotin BoxOverwhelmed by the selection? Your best bet is to purchase one of the brand’s signature Copper Ballotin boxes, loaded with layers of tasty chocolates made from raw, natural ingredients. Each box comes with a very handy ‘tasting map’ so you can identify each sweet before biting in. Cococo’s team of master chocolatiers has been handmaking these chocolates for well over 20 years, yet they’re always innovating – the Ballotin boxes are the easiest way to sample their 48 core chocolates and a few new treasures along the way. With a selection of white, dark, and milk chocolates filled with fruit, nuts, and ganache, these scrumptious boxes are equally delectable on the outside, thanks to the signature Ballotin shape and warm copper-rose colour.

While the Ballotin box remains a year-round hallmark of Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut, they also release tons of seasonal products. For Valentine’s Day, you can, naturally, pick up some delicious filled heart chocolates, available in milk, white and dark shells and filled with special seasonal creams including passionfruit, marionberry and raspberry fresh cream – in fact these particular flavours have just hit the shelves as of January 30th!

Chocolate Heart

One of the best ways to enjoy these little hearts is through the purchase of a Chocolate Heart box. This mouthwatering treat is available in three different sizes – and is designed for sharing, making it a gift for you as much as your love. Again, the varieties will mimic what’s in the classic Ballotin boxes, but you’ll also see a few of those seasonally-appropriate fresh cream hearts pop up as well.

Chocolate Heart LollipopsAnd of course, if you’re looking for just a sweet slice of chocolately heaven, the brand’s heart-shaped chocolate lollipops or their moulded chocolates are wonderful choices – particularly for little ones. The chocolate lollipops are made from pure milk chocolate and wrapped in pink or red foil, for a sweet treat at any age (consider buying a dozen and crafting a bouquet as a fun alternative to flowers). Meanwhile you can also buy a moulded item – like a cupid, or something more attuned to your sweetheart’s loveliness; like their initials or a favourite hobby that’s replicated in delicious chocolate.

If you’re a baker, Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut also sells their signature chocolate in a number of baking-friendly forms; from shavings to dust on top of a cupcake to large-sized bars that can be melted for an exquisite fondue to chocolate drops (aka chips) that will transform your quick breads.

My true recommendation is to pop into a Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut shop if you can (they’ve got 34 of them) to get the full experience. Inhaling the sweet aroma of the chocolates, taking in their individual beauty, and perusing the brand’s latest offerings is the best way to fully appreciate the efforts (and success) of this Canadian brand. Just don’t blame me when you come out with an armful of chocolate!

Chocolate Cupid

And finally, I’ve got some very exciting news! In the spirit of St. Valentine, myself and Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut will be giving away two Ballotin boxes, valued at $85 a piece! Interested in winning? See below to learn how you can enter. And if you like contests in general, I’ve got plenty more on the CGG. Check them out here!

2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around March 1st, 2014 to select the winners, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.

3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible for this promotion.
