Perfecting the Craft
Call it a response to our ever-connected digital world, but DIY has never been hotter. Actually ironically enough, the real culprit is probably Pinterest, which is chockful of inspiration for everything from refurbishing an old dresser to creating homespun goodies for your party guests to take home. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all the crafting possibilities out there – I’ve got good news.
Designher Kit is an ultra cool (and Canadian!) subscription service that sends you all the supplies you’ll need to craft three pieces of jewelry or accessories. What is this sorcery you ask? It’s pretty simple. You sign up, and for $19 a month, you get sent a cute envelope jam-packed with chains, clasps, tassels, beads, clips – you name it.
Now if you’re less craftily inclined like myself you may be asking – now what? Again with the simple. All you have to do is log onto the Designher Kit website, click on ‘Craft Table’, and you’ll get handy step-by-step instructions (with photographs) to take these raw materials into some totally usable – and adorable. Unlike a formal jewelry-making class, there’s no time limit. If you’ve only got a few minutes to fasten two beads together, that’s a-ok – no one’s going to come harassing you for not finishing it in one go (although it is rather satisfying to do so, I’ll admit).
Now if you’ve got a budding jewelry artiste on your hands but they don’t have any tools on hand, Designher Kit even has you covered with their smart ‘Starther Kit’. For $29, you’ll be sent a package including various pliers, wire cutters, a glue gun and sticks, and a thread nipper – all of the basic tools you’ll need to craft literally any of Designher Kit’s pieces.
So why does this service rocketh and who should you snag it for? Well for one, it’s pretty reasonably priced when you consider you’ll have (relatively) one-of-a-kind pieces. Plus, the next time someone fingers that strand of beads around your neck and asks where you got it from, you can (smugly, it’s okay) tell them you made it yourself. I also kind of sort of LOVE the idea of gathering your girlfriends or your sister or your mom for an afternoon around your kitchen table for a crafting and catching up session. With that in mind, this would make a swell last-minute Mother’s Day gift, especially since it requires no gift wrap and can be purchased for up to a year-long subscription. It’s also a sweet gift for someone you’re aching to spend a touch more time with, especially if you get a subscription for yourself.
While Designher Kit is quite happy to make an appearance in your mailbox once a month, you can also pay a visit to their Toronto studio for some hands on experience in creating your own gilded pieces. Whether you book the space for a private event (like a shower or gals’ only family reunion) or pop in for one of their camps or classes, you’ll walk away with lovely pieces that are lovingly made with your own two hands.
I hope you guys enjoyed this introduction to what I think is one of the more unique Canadian brands I’ve had the privilege to review on this blog. And if you’re itching to take a break from staring at this screen so you can get down to concocting your own beautiful gems, I’ve got some super news: As an EXTRA special bonus for all you CGG readers, if you subscribe to Designher Kit by May 31, 2014 and enter the code GIFTGUIDEBONUS, you’ll actually be a sent a fourth bonus project with your first kit (the bonuses are pretty gorgeous, as evidenced by a look through the ‘Craft Table’ archives). Beyond that, I’m giving away a six-month subscription to Designher Kit to one lucky winner!
Here’s how to enter:
1) Take a peek at the Designher Kit website’s Craft Table and tell me in the comments below – which design would you be most interested in trying your hand at? You’ve got till May 26 to speak up!
2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around May 27, 2014 to select the winners, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.
3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible for this promotion.
4) Bonus Entry: 1, 2, 3, 4 ways to earn bonus entries into this fun draw. Whatever you choose to do, please put each of your bonus entries into a separate comment, or they won’t be counted.
