Find of the Month: Opelle
As I’ve probably noted on this blog in the past, fall is my favourite season for shopping and updating my wardrobe. Despite my antipathy toward winter as a whole, there’s something enticing about picking up some new sweaters and knit tights as we head into the slightly brisker fall weather. To that end, fall is also a super time to update your accessories wardrobe. A new pair of boots or a sleek bag can instantly update last season’s classics – and last you for many seasons to come. With that in mind, I bring you Opelle, a Canadian handbag brand based in Toronto that custom crafts each bag by hand. The designs are functional while also bringing plenty of style – and with the launch of their new fall collection, it’s the perfect time to take a peek for yourself.
Baby Ballet Bag – $324
Every Fall and Spring, Opelle launches a new collection. The colours, styles and textures may shift between seasons, but there are some commonalities. For example, Opelle prides itself on hand-selecting top grain leather and lambskin hides from Italy and Germany. The hides are by-products of the food industry, and Opelle takes care to hand cut each piece to maintain their unique character. One of the standouts from this season – at least in my book – is the Baby Ballet Bag. Available in seven colours, this chic bag is a slightly more petite take on one of the brand’s signature teardrop-shaped bags, the Ballet.
Opelle Baby Bundle Bag – $258
Like I mentioned, Opelle‘s collections are inspired by a particular them each season. This fall, they’ve harkened back to the Dirty 30’s; an era when design became focused on function and repurposing raw materials into something more luxurious. All of the bags this season have a slightly pared down look; free from frippery and excessive detail, they’re instead focused on striking fabrics, classic, clean cut lines, and total usability. Even something like the little Baby Bundle Bag picture above packs plenty of practicality into a cute, of-the-moment shape: sling it over your shoulder for a workday lunch (and leave your bulky tote bag behind) then slip into something a little more comfortable and don it for a night on the town with the girls.
Liria Satchel – $374 each
That call to the 1930s is also represented in the brand’s minimalist, utilitarian colour scheme for the season. The palette is decidedly muted, with the deep hunter green ‘Pines’ and the pinky-cream ‘Pearl’ providing flashes of colour amongst dark blues, reds, and greys. Most of the lines’ bags – including the striking Liria Satchel, above – are available in every colour offered this season, but act fast – a shade you may like could be discontinued come spring. That’s not to say the colours are strictly seasonal (although they may appear a touch heavy against a light and bright spring wardrobe). Even the sparkling metallics sprinkled throughout the collection have a certain timeless feel to them; a purchase from Opelle is an investment in your wardrobe, a piece that will stand the test of time both in terms of durability and style.
Lotus Weekender Bag – $450
A particularly cool feature of the brand is the way they scale their bags up and down. Like I mentioned above, they regularly scale down their bags for those ladies that don’t need buckets of space, like with the Baby Ballet bag I already highlighted, and the Liria Satchel, which comes in another smaller size. But they’ll also increase the size for different uses. For example, the Lotus Weekender Bag above is meant to be a slouchy, oversize version of their regular Lotus bag, designed for overnight sleepovers or quick jaunts out of town (heck, it could even pull double duty as a roomy diaper bag).
Mini Pochettes – $96 each
On the opposite end of the scale, Opelle also has truly petite-sized bag options, like the adorable Mini Pochettes pictured above. These compact bags in particular make really lovely bridesmaid gifts, as they leave enough room for the essentials and can be worn again and again, with outfits both casual and formal.
Fold Over Clutch – $178
Another, smaller offering is the surprisingly roomy Fold Over Clutch bag, which is available in a range of this season’s new colours. With a removable strap, it can double as a lightweight shoulder bag or as a stylish, neutral evening accessory. The bag is made from oh-so-smooth buttery soft leather, which has been specially treated to really emphasize its unique texture. The result is a piece that’ll draw admiring glances all night long.
Opelle bags are wonderful gift ideas for your wife, mother, sister, or even your best friends. The investment is a little steeper – but the key word here is investment.
