Cross My Heart
The holiday season is truly the season for indulgence. Whether dipping into a tin full of freshly baked shortbread cookies or knocking back that third glass of mulled wine or simply shopping to your heart’s content, we all tend to feel a little reckless as the year draws to a close. Hence the spike in gym memberships and vows to ‘do better’ in the new year. But here’s a wild and crazy idea: why not build in some healthy activity into the holiday hustle and bustle? With today’s gift idea, all you need is a little space – and some motivation to get off that couch.
Crossrope is a new innovation in hardcore fitness. As you may remember from your days of huffing and puffing as an elementary school kid, or perhaps more recently as part of an interdisciplinary fitness regime, jumping rope is one of the toughest but most effective ways to get a workout. In fact, I give credit to whatever genius drilled it into our heads as kids that skipping rope is a ‘fun’ activity – it makes the burn of attempting it as an adult feel at least a little bit like you’re actually just playing a game.
But here’s what you may not know about jump rope: not all ropes are created equal. I mean that in terms of quality sure, but I’m also talking about purpose. Some ropes are designed to go faster for speed training, some ropes are designed to be heavier for more resistance. It’s pretty incredible that you can get such a range of workouts from one simple rope – but that’s not the case either. Any skipping enthusiast will tell you that you have to build up quite a range of ropes in order to avoid getting literally or physically ‘bored’. Enter Crossrope.
Developed by a former Navy pilot, Crossrope is an interchangeable jump rope system that allows you to customize your jump rope workout based on your fitness goals and level. Given that their ropes are made from cables, they’re extremely durable and up to even the most fierce of workouts, rotating smoothly with every pump of your arms. The cable material also allows you to select from different weights, so you can opt for a light cable for a speed round, a heavy rope for an extra challenge, or the thickest of cables for an all out endurance test.
It’s also a great pick if you’re a frequent traveler – and have some space to get hoppin’. All you need is one set of Crossrope’s sturdy handles, and your choice of ropes. They’re super easy to attach and detach, and they take up minimal room (and weight) in your luggage. I also sincerely appreciate that the brand does NOT advocate a one-size-fits-all approach to their ropes. They actually have a handy sizing questionnaire to help you identify which rope length is right for you.
The ropes themselves start at just $9.95 for a super slim 2 oz ‘sprint’ cable, and climb up as the weight increases, with the ‘priciest’ pick at $31.95 for a heavy duty 3 lb rope. Good luck with that one hardcores. To simplify things though, I recommend starting out by taking a look at Crossrope’s pre-packaged sets that are geared toward different fitness objectives. It’s a great way to try your ‘hand’ at the interchangeable function of the ropes, without any guessing about which ropes pair well together.
From a gift-giving perspective, it’s a fantastic pick for any fitness buff in your family – jump ropes are becoming a gold standard for virtually any workout regime, including everyone from CrossFit buffs to runners looking to improve their endurance. Or hey, like I said before, there’s nothing wrong with ‘indulging’ yourself with a set to help stave off all those other indulgences this holiday season.
Crossrope is available online and does ship to Canada. Of course, as with most U.S. brands I recommend getting those orders in sooner rather than later – it’ll take about 5-10 days for your order to make its way north of the border. And if you’re keen on getting your jump on this holiday season (and beyond), I’ve got some swell news: I’m giving away two $75 Crossrope gift codes so you can buy your way to better health. Want to win one? Here’s how to enter:
1) Take a peek at the Crossrope site and learn a bit more about their products. Then, leave me a comment by midnight November 23, 2014 telling me which rope, or rope set, you’d like to try.
2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around November 24, 2014 to select the winner(s), who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.
3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible for this promotion.
4) Bonus Entries: Two ways to earn ’em. If you do them both, be sure to leave one comment per thing that you do. In other words – your base entry, and each of these bonus entries, would equal three separate comments. Got me?
