Toy Oh Toy
I actually highlighted today’s featured brand back over the holiday season. But with a bit more breathing room outside of the madness of that time, I thought it was time to give Discovery Toys a bit more of a spotlight. The brand was actually founded in 1978, and features a direct sale model similar to companies like Mary Kay, Tupperware and Partylite. The big difference of course, is the kid factor. The products here are all educational toys designed to stimulate kids’ minds while encouraging creativity and independent problem-solving. With products available for even the tiniest of tots, Discovery Toys is a brand meant to grow with your family. Today, I’m highlighting some of my favourite picks from their collection, as well as introducing an exciting opportunity for some of my more enterprising readers.
BBQ Blitz – $35
Who says educational toys need to look or feel boring? This amusing, summer-friendly game is the perfect toy to break out at your next family picnic. Kids are tasked to ‘flip’ burger patties until they find the one that matches their toppings. It’s a simple enough game for the little ones, but it encourages kids to build up their fine motor and memory skills. I also wanted to highlight it to demonstrate a key aspect of Discovery Toys – they are regularly adding new products, making it a snap for their Educational Consultants to continually offer up new and exciting developmental toys and tools for parents of kids at any age.
Zip Track – $60 (Add-On Set = $30, Racer = $20)
It’s not exactly a secret that kids l-o-v-e to build things, particularly train and car tracks. Again, Discovery Toys delivers by capitalizing on the toys your children already know and love – but making them more interactive. The main kit comes with 200 pieces of track, plus some specialty pieces, that your child can rearrange to create the track of their dreams. The varied colours encourage them to build a pattern, while pieces like a raised bridge element taste their spatial intelligence. The main kit comes with a battery-powered car, but you can also grab an extra car or some additional pieces to make the course that much more customizable and fun. A cool alternative to any ‘hot’ toy car brands out there.
Bazaar Game – $40
Even the most staunch math haters won’t be able to resist this fast-paced, challenging game. I’ll admit, part of the appeal are the gemstones you’re collecting and trading for, but this is a game designed for the entire family to play – and get more intelligent while doing so. A roll of the die dictates what’s up for sale (or trade) within the fictional, bustling bazaar you and your kids are visiting. Everyone will be challenged to do the math and figure out the most efficient and effective way to collect their desired gem horde.
Percussion Jam – $42
Be the life of your next Discovery Toys party when you break out this fun set of high quality instruments for kids. You’ve likely heard about the way music helps kids develop a ton of skills – the earlier you expose them to it, the better. This cute kid includes three, pint-sized instruments designed to fit in a little one’s hands. From a leather-topped tambourine to a rattle-esque clapper to a classic ‘guiro’, which makes a fun ratchet noise, you and your children will have a fun ‘fam jam’ when you break this out and play along to your favourite songs.
Sprouts Campout – $35
Not all of Discovery Toys‘ products are quite so specifically ‘activity’ based as the items I’ve highlighted above. Their new campout kit, for example, is very much designed to inspire a child’s imagination and let them envision a night spent under the stars – even if they’re simply hiding out in your basement. This adorable kit includes a duffle bag for stashing all of the plastic, faux key camping essentials – including the ingredients for ‘smores, a weenie on a fork, a little log fire, and a glow-in-the-dark lantern. Not only is it a fun way to keep the kiddies occupied when it’s too cold to actually be outdoors, by the time summer rolls around they’ll be itching to get in touch with nature. Ideal for ages two and up.
Measure Up Cups – $17
As I mentioned at the outset, Discovery Toys carries gifts for kids of all ages – including super little tots. This collection of 12, multi-functional toys is so simple yet so versatile at the same time, and can be used by kids as young as 12 months. Your children can nest ’em in order to hone their spatial intelligence skills (they also, for the record, stack as a tower). They can also use them in the tub to scoop water and bubbles and generally have a splashing good time. And the bottom of each cup features a different ‘stamp’ that your kid can imprint into sand or Plasticine to create different shapes. Simple idea – awesome potential. No wonder it’s one of Discovery Toys’ top sellers.
As I’ve alluded to throughout this post, Discovery Toys is sold through a peer-to-peer system. You can either join them as an Educational Consultant, or team up with an Educational Consultant in your area and throw a party. It’s an awesome career opportunity for moms (or dads) that are doing the stay-at-home parenting thing and want to earn a little extra income on the side while enriching their kids’ lives. The model is simple – you or a friend hosts a party, fellow logic-minded parents place orders, you earn a commission. And if you’re a party hostess, you get a ton of great benefits too. With the current baby boom continuing to explode (and showing no signs of stopping) this is a fab opportunity to get in with Discovery Toys and help shape the gift-giving habits of your friends and loved ones.
To celebrate this exciting opportunity, I’ve got a Discovery Toys prize package to give away, valued at $169! There are a few recurring themes: six colours of the rainbow/colour wheel, lifetime guarantee, each toy can be used in multiple ways, each toy addresses multiple types of learning and types of skills. The guarantee got my attention. Saw older kids banging on the balls/boat. Amazing material if they offer replacements. Love it all. I also work with kids with autism and they have made huge improvements with these.
