This Is Where I Leave You…

Happy 2018 everyone!

Believe it or not, it’s been nearly eight years since I started this blog. At the time, I started it because I loved writing and was already an avid personal blogger, but wanted to experiment with writing for a mass audience. There were plenty of amazing fashion and beauty blogs out at the time, and while I loved both areas (as well as a few other specific niches, like books), I felt like I wanted to write on something that would let me explore a more diverse range of subjects.

The idea eventually came to me to write a gift-giving blog. I’d been told for years I was a very thoughtful gift giver, who had a knack for tracking down creative gifts people often had never heard of but truly loved. Writing about gifts allowed me to write about all those things I already loved – beauty, fashion, books, etc. – and so, so much more.

The first year I started this blog, it was a slog, and if I had one piece of advice to any blogger, it’s to expect the same (unless lightning strikes). I had minimal readers and was struggling to track down gift ideas that were readily available in Canada.

A lot has changed since then. I have tens of thousands of readers stop by this blog every single month, and thousands of you are subscribers too. I’ve worked with some of the biggest brands in the world, and helped promote some amazing indie brands in Canada and abroad.

This blog, while definitely not my full-time job (in fact I make $0 writing for the brands I feature on here), has been a huge part of my life for the last seven and a half years and opened up some amazing opportunities for me elsewhere.

Tracks

Excitingly though, I’m embarking on a new chapter in my non-blogging life. My husband and I are expecting our first child, due in the (quite!) near future.

From the time we first started talking about having kids, I knew that sustaining this blog would be a major challenge, if not an impossibility, at least for awhile. It’s definitely a strange thing to not be planning next quarter’s editorial content, and coordinating awesome giveaways for you guys, and working with a bunch of new brands and longtime partners – and I had a ton of people asking to work with me that I couldn’t align things with for the holidays. But at the end of the day, for now I’m focusing on this awesome new adventure that I’m sure is going to radically change my life!

All of this to say – the Canadian Gift Guide is on hiatus. I may still be posting some fun gift ideas to Instagram (follow me here) here and there, but I have no firm plans for my blog in the near future beyond that. Thank you all for your warm wishes and comments and follows over the years – it’s been a treat to see this blog grow and to hear from so many of you that you’ve bought gift ideas after reading about them here!

Until we meet again…

Brittany

I really loved getting to know so many unique Canadian brands. Good luck in this exciting new chapter and if you take any advice take this: sleep when your baby sleeps! Exhaustion will convince you that you are losing it when all you really need is a nap! XO
