School is just around the corner for many folks of all ages – so today, I bring you five picks for backpack choices. Not hitting the books? Consider snapping up a bag for a friend who’s constantly on the go: whether to the gym, playgroup, nature walks, or even just weekend road trips.

Sprayground Backpacks – $48-$50
Although the folks behind Sprayground are moreso known for their graffiti-inspired packs, their fall collection draws on everyday materials in a very fun way. The bags are also uber practical – a main compartment features pockets for you iPod, iPad, and phone, while a secondary compartment snugly fits a 17″ laptop: perfect for students, writers, and freelancers on the go. They ship to Canada, but it is a little pricy – $20-ish – so choose wisely!

Built NY Laptop Backpack
If your giftee is more of a laptop-only type of person, consider streamlining their daily haul with this sleek, neoprene backpack from Built NY, available through the Dell website. Despite its tiny size, this futuristic case has three separate compartments that allow you to stash books and supplies alongside your laptop or netbook of up to 17″.

Roots Western Satchel – $318
Mature students rejoice! Roots has been making a splash with their luxe leather bags for some time now – check out their classic line of messenger and laptop bags for a take on the school bag that is easily convertible to life after hours, and after you’ve been handed your diploma. Of course, good quality and long-term function doesn’t come without a hefty price – most bags suitable for school use start at $200 and up.

Dante Beatrix Little Kid Backpack – Monkey – $43
If the school kid you’re buying for is of the preschool variety, be sure to check out Dante Beatrix’s adorable line of kid-friendly animal designs in parent-friendly easy-to-clean nylon and varnished canvas. Sized for ages 2 to 5 there are tons of different options to suit your kiddie’s dream pet.

lululemon Wanderlust Rucksack – $98
Remember when I said bags have uses beyond back-to-school? lululemon’s Wanderlust Rucksack is a sporty take on the classic shape, with an area to tote your yoga mat and plenty of space to stuff all your yoga gear. And when you’re not using it for the gym, clip in a towel for the beach, blanket for a picnic, or even a space sleeping bag for a weekend camping excursion.
