Treasure Trove

Today I’ve raided the vaults of the Royal Canadian Mint to bring you some more great gift-giving ideas for the holiday season. I kid, I kid. On the vault part anyway – the gift ideas are solid gold.

The cool thing about gifts from the Mint is they really aren’t just for coin collectors. Our Mint is actually world-renowned as one of the leading designers of all things coin-related; from our colour imprints, intricate etchings, and sparkly accents, you’d be hard-pressed to find coins as beautiful as the ones coming from our homeland.

Best of all, they’ve got a collection that spans tons of interests and occasions, and thus, my top four picks for what you should consider scooping up for folks on your gift list by December 24th. Want to purchase any of ’em directly? Just click on the links (coin titles) for each item and you’ll be taken to the Mint website – order by November 30th and you should receive your goods with plenty of time to spare. Alternatively they’ve got gift boutiques in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto, if you live in the area and want to ogle these in person before purchasing.

For The Royal Watcher: 25 Cent Coloured Wedding Coin – $25.95
It was a banner year for acknowledging our ties to the monarchy, at least when it came to celebrating a certain fairy tale wedding between HRH Prince William of Wales and Catherine, newly minted (ha) Duchess of Cambridge, alongside their whirlwind tour of Canada this summer. If someone in your cadre is a diehard Royal fan, saw the happy couple in person this summer, or simply wants a reminder that someday their prince (literal or imagined) will come, this coin is the perfect keepsake. The image on it is as crystal clear as a photograph, and the sweet folio of images of the happy couple doesn’t hurt either.

For The Hockey Hound: 25 Cent Coloured Gretzky Coin – $34.99
The Great One is one of Canada’s greatest hockey treasures – so naturally, Canada’s original golden boy on the ice belongs on a golden coin of his own yes? This retro-inspired packet features a painted image of Wayne Gretzky during his early Oiler days, and makes a perfect gift for any hockey collector in your household. Another fun idea? Snap it up for your kids’ hockey coach as a thank-you for helping pave their way to the NHL, or at least through a fun year of recreational play. Bonus: a portion of sales from this coin go to Wayne Gretzky Foundation to get even more young people involved in our nation’s favourite sport.

For The Coin Collector: Canada 2011 Special Uncirculated Set – $23.95
Okay okay, I said that the Mint has a ton of stuff for non-coin collectors, but let’s give a shoutout to people who simply appreciate a good bit of sparkle on their shelves, you follow me? This special eight-coin set is a true bargain, with six quarters emblazoned with Aboriginal art-inspired animals, a tribute to Parks Canada, and a special Toonie showcasing our magnificent boreal forests. It’s a great gift for the newbie collector to get them started, or a great addition to the hardcore fans of the Mint’s always-innovative designs. With the general nature theme of the set, it’s also a cool stocking stuffer for the most outdoorsy member of your clan.
For The Jets Junkie: Winnipeg Jets 50 Cent Coin – $14.95
I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for the Jets mania that’s taken over Winnipeg this year: after all, I was a resident for quite sometime myself! That’s why I’m so extra excited to share this sleek silver coin with you, featuring the new Winnipeg Jets logo for the very first time. This is a serious collector’s item if you consider many more Jets coins’ll be rolling out for years to come (cause we all know that team is going NOWHERE this time), plus it’s at a great price point to buy multiples to give to your kids, nieces and nephews, siblings, et al to commemorate this very special year in the long and storied history of one of the NHL’s most beloved franchises. Let’s just say there’s a reason this is one of the most popular items in the Mint’s catalog this year.

Now, I wouldn’t raid the vaults (again, I kid!) of the Mint without coming back with some goodies for you all. So here’s the scoop. One lucky winner will get their choice of one of my top four picks highlighted above. Intrigued? Read on to find out how to enter:

1) Leave a comment below before November 25th and tell me which of the four coin gifts above you’d pick AND why. Be sure to include your name and email address (the latter of which only I can see) so I can contact you if you win!
2) Entries are limited to one per person per email address (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around November 25th to select the winner, who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.
3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible to participate in this promotion.
4) Bonus Entry Time: I’m feeling lonely on Twitter. Follow me @cdngiftguide (and drop your Twitter handle in the comments below so I know it’s you!) for a bonus entry into this post’s draw.

For full rules & regs, feel free to drop me an email at canadiangiftguide -at- gmail -dot- com. May you have the Midas touch on this one!

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED – THANKS FOR ENTERING!

I would either give it to my son whom we have bought uncirculated sets for since he was born in 1985 or I’d give it to my 72 year old father as he was the one who helped me collect coins so I could earn my “Collector’s Badge” when I was in Brownies in the 1970s.
