Oil Thrill
When most people think about oil in the winter time, they’re probably imagining themselves under a hot, decidedly Southern sun, lathering up before chilling pool (or ocean)-side. But since the bulk of us are stuck up here in the Northern hemisphere, it’s time to think of other ways to bring a little oil into your life, specifically to protect your wind-whipped skin this bittersweet season.
Enter Weleda, a Swiss-derived company with over ninety years of experience in growing Biodynamic gardens – as in, a step beyond the goodness of Organic farming – to create truly all-natural products that are good for the planet, good for your body, and really, good for the soul.
There’s been some resistance to oils in the past for a multitude of reasons. Some people believe they’re too greasy. Others are worried about clogging up pores. But here’s the plain and simple truth. Oils may actually be a better way to protect your skin. For one, they don’t have any water in them, meaning one less barrier to absorption into your skin. For another, they’re actually pretty environmentally friendly (for the planet and to keep nasty toxins off your body) given Weleda’s oils are made with 100% natural ingredients like jojoba or lemon peel oil. Because these products are naturally based, they actually simulate the qualities of your skin, recreating your own lipid barrier and restoring (instead of simply shielding) your epidermis.
Weleda has got a serious stake in the oil market, with over half a dozen different fragrances each boasting its own benefit to your skin. Looking for a daily moisturizer? Try the garden-fresh Wild Rose or hydra-intensive Sea Buckthorn. Want to give mom a special treat to tighten up her skin? Check out the new Pomegranate-based regenerating oil, or the Birch cellulite oil. Or go for something that does double-duty – give your sweetheart a Valentine’s gift with residual benefits: a therapeutic, muscle-soothing home massage using warming Arnica massage oil, or an evening rubdown with relaxing Lavender oil.
Another benefit to oil: it’s great for sensitive skin because it’s free from chemicals and complex lotions and creams that can irritate or dry you out. In fact, there’s an entire line of Weleda products that uses Almond Oil as a key ingredient (including intensive care Almond Soothing Oil) that’s ideal to keep nasty, flaky skin at bay over the next few months. As mentioned above, let me allay your fears on this stuff – it will blend and absorb rapidly into your skin, and actually give you a healthy glow under makeup. No greasiness. No skin clogs. No over-the-top fragrances. Just pure, natural goodness. Consider getting the whole set of almond products for your best gal pal, girlfriend, or sister.
Finally, a bonus gift idea: if there’s a little one in your midst, consider giving mom a package of Weleda’s Calendula baby products. Infused with gentle Marigold (aka Calendula) that’s harvested by hand and lightly warms the body, it’s an ideal product to use on a child’s extremely delicate skin to start proper skincare at a young age. Plus nothing quite gets a little one to sleep than a nice mini-massage before bedtime.
Obviously I’m giving three cheers to Weleda because they’re seriously socially conscious. They harvest their natural ingredients through prudent farming methods, work with fair trade partners, and actually take a few moments to think about just what it is we’re slathering on our bodies. Their packaging is recyclable (or reusable – the glass apothecary bottles can be rinsed out and topped up with your other fave bath products), they’ve got all natural certifications up the yin yang, and quite frankly, they’re innovators. If you’re with me, you can buy any of the Weleda products directly through their website, Whole Foods, natural independent health food stores, Planet Organic (which I’m obsessed with), Nature’s Fare, Noah’s Natural Foods, and Rexall Pharma Plus.
Now if your skin has tightened up in the last few minutes and you’re itching for a winter cure, I’ve got a wonderful prize package for one lucky winner to have a taste of the better-than-good-life for the next few months, including the Body Oils Essential Kit, and two full-sized oils in Wild Rose and Citrus, for a total value of $74.99!
