Something Blue
You’ve all heard of the bridal tradition of ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue’, right? As the story goes, a brides is supposed to adorn herself with something from each of these categories for good luck on her special day. I was originally going to write a fun little post on each of the four components, but ultimately realized the first three were pretty easy (especially since most brides are donning a new dress, shoes, jewelry – you name it). If you’re searching for Something Old ideas, check out vintage stores or pop over to Etsy to pick up antique charmers like a brooch for your bouquet or a sparkly hair piece. As for Something Borrowed? Survey your friends and family for accessories; a pretty diamond bracelet, beaded clutch, or sentimental family heirloom can be the perfect touch to finish off your look.
Now, one of the areas many brides struggle with (it seems) is the Something Blue. I’ve seen a whole host of ideas, but I thought it was time I round some Something Blue gift ideas up for myself. If you’re the Maid of Honour or Mother of the Bride – take note and suggest one of these to your bride-to-be.
Bridal Thong Panty – $18.50 @ Victoria’s Secret
Here’s a hint: your ‘Something Blue’ doesn’t have to be visible to the naked eye! If you’re *not* wearing a formfitting dress, a cute pair of briefs emblazoned with a rhinestone promise can make for a cheeky surprise once the festivities have wound down. In fact, many of the friends I surveyed with the lingerie route when incorporating a ‘Blue’ into their ensemble.
‘Something Blue’ Nail Polish – $14 @ Julep
It doesn’t get much more bridal than a nail polish that’s perfectly named for this longstanding tradition. A perfect shade of jewelry box blue, bring a bottle of this pretty polish to your pre-wedding pedicure for a subtle yet noticeable way of showing your blue streak. Plus, you’ll still have fun wearing it well after the big day.
Something Blue Vintage Wedding Garter Set – $21.28 @ Simply Kate Grace
One of the more classic ways to incorporate blue is through your wedding garter. I absolutely love these vintage-inspired sets featuring ivory roses and beads for a special keepsake. Best of all, each garter set comes with two pieces – one of you to keep, and one for your hubby to toss to a lucky gent in attendance. It’s yet another way to keep the tradition going while also keeping it more on the private side. Glint ‘Radiance’ Pump – $130 @ Nordstrom
Blue Crochet Women’s Classics – $70 @ Toms
It seemed like a cop out to separate these two since they are two sides of the same blue coin, but I also couldn’t decide which pair was more adorable. For all you glam goddesses, these satin pumps are finished with a touch of pristine bridal sparkle so you can shimmy all night. Bonus: the reasonable heel makes them extra manageable. Meanwhile if you’re on the Toms train in terms of donning the trendy-yet-comfy shoes on your wedding day, these blue crochet beauties are the perfect blend of elegant and breezy. A great choice if you want to change out of those aching heels for your reception.
Something Blue Ribbon Wedding Anklet – $15.96 @ Arte Di Amore
So confession time – part of my rationale for doing this post was to round of some of my most favourite ‘blue’ ideas so I could pick one for my own wedding, and this pretty and elegant anklet is what I chose! First, a history lesson. Have you ever heard of a ‘ribbon pull’? It’s an old Victorian tradition where members of the bridal party pull charms that have been embedded under the bottom layer of the wedding cake. Each charm has a special meaning, and makes for an extra special keepsake. Designer Jennifer Miller wanted the bride to have a ribbon pull of her own, so she designed this elegant and timeless ‘I Do’ anklet to preserve two traditions in one simple accessory. Genius!
Still not finding the perfect Something Blue? Here’s a few other rapid fire ideas for you to look into:
– Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings – jewelry of any kind, really!
– A blue-tinted crinoline to keep your dress poufy while showing a hint of the colour with every step
– A blue clutch to stash your mirror and bridal touch-up kit
– Blue ‘I Do’ shoe stickers
– A blue hair comb or accessory
– Special touches like embroidering a blue patch into your dress, or a message onto your veil
– Cheap & cheerful idea: a blue ribbon wrapped around your bouquet
