Foodie Fridays: Oh She Glows
Angela Liddon is my totally my vegan chef homegirl. For one thing, she’s Canadian (based in Toronto). For another, she is supremely talented at creating dishes that do a body good while tasting damn good. After discovering her wildly popular blog a couple of years ago, I was astonished she didn’t have an official cookbook under her belt. Upon discovering one was finally being released this year, honestly, there wasn’t a cookbook I was more looking forward to acquiring. The amazing thing is, girl delivers!
Beyond being Canadian, some background on why Angela Liddon and The Oh She Glows Cookbook rock. After struggling with an eating disorder, Angela finally decided to take control of her diet by developing a healthy, loving relationship with food – turning to a plant-based diet. All of her recipes are designed to do a body good while lighting up your tastebuds; many recipes feature subtle sources of protein (hello chia seeds!), detoxifying ingredients, skin brighteners, and even good-for-your cancer fighters.
The great thing is you can dive into pretty much any recipe knowing that you’re going to come out with a meal that’s hearty, satisfying, healthy and scrumptious (although serious calorie counters should note that a detailed nutritional breakdown is not included).
The Oh She Glows Cookbook features over 100 recipes, the bulk of which cannot be found on the associated website. Each section features a carefully curated collection of no more than 10 recipes, making it easy for you to digest (hah) what appeals to you on any given visit to the cookbook. Perhaps most importantly, I should note that Angela Liddon is also a food photographer – and a damn good one at that. Virtually all of her recipes are accompanied by a mouthwatering photo of the finished product, giving you an idea of how that tasty Crowd Pleasing Tex Mex Casserole should not only turn out, but some creative serving options as well. Honestly, if you put this in someone’s hands and didn’t tell them it was a vegan cookbook, I think they’d be hard-pressed to imagine that it was, based on how mind-blowingly amazing the photography is.
The recipes themselves include a rather hefty section of basics (including tips on how to make your own chia seed jam and nut milk!) coupled with a range of ideas for smoothies and teas, breakfasts, entrees, soups, salads, and yes, desserts, like the Fudgy Mocha Pudding Cake pictured above. It’s definitely worth noting that many of the Oh She Glows Cookbook recipes are also allergen-sensitive; you’ll find a fair number of recipes that either are, or can be made into, soy-free, nut-free or gluten-free dishes (among other factors), making this an ideal pick for the sensitive eaters on your list.
And don’t discount the fact the author is from Canada either; although she lives in Toronto and thus has pretty great access to some of the slightly more exotic ingredients on her pantry list, ultimately I had no problem finding virtually anything she references. A Canadian writer shopping in Canadian stores has a much stronger grasp on what’s readily available to us (and typically offers a lot of seasonal options as well). Just another check in the plus column!
All told, the recipes in this book look so delectable, I’ve actually got plans to cook my way through ’em. I’m trying to think of the last time I was as impressed by a cookbook as this one, but drawing a blank. Seriously. Get it. Buy it for your vegetarian friends. Buy it for your mom. Buy it for your best friend that’s on a detox regime. You won’t regret it. And now, I’m giving away a copy too! Here’s how to enter:

2) Entries are limited to one per person / per email address / per household (or more if you score bonus entries). A random draw will be conducted on or around March 27, 2014 to select the winner(s), who will have 48 hours to respond before another winner is chosen in their place.
3) Entries are limited to Canadians that have reached the age of majority in their province. Quebec is not eligible for this promotion.

I have been following Oh She Glows for almost a year now. This blog has changed my life. I have been vegetarian for most of my life, and vegan for most of the past 3 years, but I have always struggled with finding a recipe book that is not laden with meat substitutions, sugar, and other junky foods. She has created a blog and cookbook that is exactly perfect for my lifestyle. I would be a very proud recipient of her cookbook and would get everyday use of it. My current weekly menu plan consists of breakfast, lunch, and dinners all from her blog. I can’t wait to try her most recent carrot cake baked oatmeal!
