Daddy Lessons
Well, I am addicted to Beyonce’s album Lemonade and thus the title of my first Father’s Day Gift Guide this month is inspired by it. Without further ado, here are some fantastic Father’s Day gift ideas for 2016!
Men’s Made in France Bar Stripe Polo – $165 @ Lacoste
Crisp, colourful and utterly versatile, Lacoste’s polo shirts are an upscale staple in every man’s ‘dream wardrobe’. This slim fit polo is made from fine cotton pique fabric, and comes in a range of stripe combinations that offer some contrast and some bright pops of colour – like sporty yellow, green or orange. It’s the type of thing he’ll reach for again and again this summer, whether hitting the links, hanging with friends or packing for that trip abroad.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – $74.99
If he loves gaming, this one is probably already on his wish list. Treasure hunter Nathan Drake globetrots around lush jungle landscapes in pursuit of a fabled pirate treasure. If that wasn’t delightful enough, the game is filled with gorgeous cinema-esque graphics, new multi-player capabilities, and hours upon hours of fun gameplay. The Playstation-exclusive series is one of the platform’s top franchises and for good reason. Just don’t expect to hear from dad for a few weeks, okay?
LapPad – $98 USD
The desktop is all but dead for home use – but sometimes a desk top would be nice while dad’s tapping away on his laptop. Enter this Canadian-made product, which aims to give dad a ‘mobile office’ no matter where he wants to work. Crafted from sturdy poplar wood, this versatile workspace features vents to keep your (up to) 17″ laptop ventilated, a built-in mousepad, and an extra slot to stash your phone or tablet to keep in touch with alerts and calls as needed. This is a perfect gift for the telecommuting dad, the media-loving dad, or the dad that wants to spend more time in the family but still has some work to get done.
Dr Teal’s Products – From $7.98 @ Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart
Dads can be a little rough and tumble with their skin – but you can help them restore their skin with the power of ultra-moisturizing avocado oil, which is found in all three of these Dr Teal’s products. All three products are designed to be used in the tub or the shower, and like most Dr Teals products, the Mineral Soak and Foaming Bath combine pure essential oils with soothing epsom salts to genuinely soothe sore muscles, create a peaceful aromatherapy experience, and of course, hydrate the skin. Finish things off with a squirt of the Bath Oil to lock in that rich moisture and have a totally huggable dad!
Netatmo Welcome – $219
Give dad the peace of mind he craves on multiple fronts with this indoor camera. Offering a super wide 130 degree angle, this stylish, discreet camera syncs with your smartphone to not only let you know when someone is in your home, but also who. So, apart from helping you keep an eye on the security of your home, this nifty gadget also lets you keep tabs on when the kids arrive (although, if you’ve got teens sneaking in friends, don’t be surprised if they try to subvert the camera!)
BLACK + DECKER SMARTECH Battery – $69 @ Canadian Tire
Behold the future: One battery to rule them all. While rechargeable batteries are amazing (and eco-friendly), nothing can make a DIYer more frustrated than their battery stopping mid-project. BLACK+DECKER’s new SMARTECH batteries are compatible with all of their 20V Max tools and are definitely smarter than your average battery. The batteries actually all connect to a free BLACK+DECKER mobile app, containing three different areas. My Products allows you to enable or disable your batteries, view how much charge each battery has, and for the forgetful dad, has a ‘locate’ feature if you’ve misplaced it. You can also be notified when your battery is running low via the Messages section of the app, while the Projects section has some great ideas and insights to make dad’s next project a total cinch to put together. If you really want to treat dad right, you can also pick up BLACK+DECKER’s Drill with SMARTECH Battery for just $10 more.
Christopher Bates for Harry Rosen Shoes – $450 each
If dad’s a dapper fellow and you want to treat him right, you can’t go wrong with a gorgeous pair of high end shoes. These luxurious shoes are all handmade in Italy, using artisan techniques and the finest materials. They’re also pretty darn eye-catching, with unique details and materials, like high shine patent leather and sumptuous velvet. For the record, not only are these sleek footwear options from Christopher Bates available at Harry Rosen, he’s also teamed up with Brown Shoes for an even more colourful, creative line ranging from $450-$498.
Bakerstone Pizza Oven Box – $129 @ Home Depot
Change up dad’s grilling routine with this unique BBQ gadget that heats up to the temperature of a real wood-burning pizza oven. Made from cordierite stones and housed in an enamel steel case, this little grill-top oven uses engineered airflow to create a gourmet pizza oven. Not only do you get the box itself, the kit comes with a pizza peel and spatula. And rest assured, while it makes fabulous pizza, you can use this outdoor oven for a range of dishes, including quesadillas, flatbreads and cookies. You can even use it to give your meats, fish and veggies a rustic, stone-fired taste.
Porter Cable 20V Cordless Nailer – $299 @ Lowe’s and Amazon.ca
Cord-free means hassle-free, especially when it comes to DIY projects around the house. Porter Cable has just launched their first two cordless finishing tools – a 18 gauge Brad Nailer and a 16 gauge Straight Finish Nailer, perfect for everything from baseboards and crown molding to assembling furniture or installing new cabinets. Not only are these tools lightweight and easy to use, they’re also quieter – a typical nailer requires a compressor with costly fuel cartridges. But the 20V rechargeable batteries for this handy device keep things convenient and efficient, with handy LED lights to tell you if the battery is running low or if your nailer has stalled or jammed. An ideal gift for the handyman around the house or if your dad is in the construction / manufacturing / design / repair industry.
CLEAN Reserve Fragrances – $125 each @ Sephora
Cologne is a classic gift on Father’s Day for a reason – what man doesn’t love smelling amazing? This year, I’m recommending a fragrance direction that’s a little off the beaten path, in the form of CLEAN’s (relatively) new Reserve collection. The brand famous for light and airy scents like ‘Cool Cotton’ and ‘Rain’ released this earthier, more complex lineup in 2015 and it’s become a fast favourite for longtime fans and newcomers. Best of all, it’s actually unisex. So if you love the scent you buy dad (or the father of your children), you can happily steal a spritz from him for yourself. And if he likes them, well, you’ve got years of other scents to buy then. They also work great for layering. Some of the more feminine scents like Velvet Flora or Blonde Rose can be tempered with a spritz of more masculine profiles, like the musky Sueded Oud (featuring incense, cypress and yes, suede) or dramatic Smoked Vetiver (with myrrh and cedarwood).
I’ve got a great prize package for one lucky winner this Father’s Day! If you win, you’ll nab a:
