Wherever I Wander

Coal and Canary Cafe Collection

What It Is: Today I’m delighted to be highlighting yet another killer Canadian brand. This one is extra special as it’s actually co-created by someone I’ve crossed paths with! Amanda Buhse (who attended the same college as me) and Tom Jansen are the brains behind Coal and Canary candles, an upstart brand that’s turned heads after being selected as an Oscars and Grammy’s gift bag item (amongst several other high profile pieces of coverage). How does a Winnipeg-based candle company take centre stage with Hollywood types you ask? Their scrumptious candles are hand-poured from a high quality blend of vegetable and soy wax and feature rich aromas that are seriously true to their real-life counterparts (I own that Baguettes & Sunsets candle you see above and it truly smells like fresh baked bread with a slather if melty butter). Not only do they come in super cute packaging with fun names, but the candles also all feature the brand’s signature wooden wick, which burns clean and creates a warm, crackling sound as it burns.

Coal and Canary Jet Set Box Set

Coal and Canary releases new candles on a seasonal basis, with a few special editions popping up on the regular (their Fresh Cut Flowers & Super Powers Mother’s Day candle was a hit with my mother-in-law!) This summer they’ve debuted an amazing gift set that features five mini-candles inspired by exotic destinations but containing roots in Canada. The Jet Set Box Set includes Vancouver to Valencia (olive, bergamot and vanilla), Calgary to Cairo (caramel, cream and coffee), Winnipeg to Waikiki (coconut, pineapple and mango), Toronto to Tokyo (cucumber, wasabi, and cilantro), and Halifax to Havana (possibly my fave – honey, tobacco and orange). Each little candle burns for hours and quickly infuses your space with a rich, luxurious scent. It’s an awesome gift whether you’re new to the brand or already a diehard fan and simply looking for the latest and greatest from them.

Who It’s For: Your minimalist friend, as it’s a gift they can use and love and then say farewell too. Your jetsetting sibling, so she can pack a travel candle amongst her gear. Your mom, as a lovely birthday present she’ll treasure for months.

What It Costs: The Jet Set Box Set retails for $50, whereas the regular candles are $30 each.

Where It’s At: There are plenty of retailers across Canada stocking these beauties, but you can also shop online.

Now for the super exciting news! I’m giving away a Coal and Canary Jet Set Box Set to one lucky reader! Want to nab it? Read on!
